13 Sentinels is a masterpiece and it’s even better on Switch

We have published thousands of words to explain why you should play the game. 13 Guardians: Aegis Rim, a daring video game that combines sci-fi metaphors of the century into something new and unpredictable. The story is universal through multiple definitions of the word, and its structure successfully blurs the lines between the visual novel and the master’s thesis in genre literature. Still, it’s understandable why most readers skipped #15 on Polygon’s list of Top 50 Games of 2020.

Like the teenage protagonists of the game, they are always one step behind the monsters who try to destroy the world, 13 guards The timing was bad. The title was released on the PlayStation 4 a few weeks before the PlayStation 5 was released, which was a bad time for a 2D game that could have worked on the PlayStation 3. Today the game finally made its Nintendo Switch debut. There are a few big releases coming out next month, so hopefully this little masterpiece can finally reach a sufficient audience.

great. But who will actually play this game that has nothing to do with established franchises, superheroes, or generic IPs? Because you probably won’t play a game as polished as this shit.

The story takes place in 1984, and there are several perspectives into the past and the future. Already in 1945 and beyond… 13 character adventures in episode sections in any order. You get to know her teenage life little by little, including her romances, rivals, motives, and fantasies. And you will learn why they will have to pilot their machines to fight Kaiju in a mysterious distant future.

Because the game doesn’t reference or borrow from science fiction, it extracts whole ideas from science fiction standards and grafts them into frightening mega-fiction. If you want to know what will happen if you remix ET, Godzilla, Terminator, The Matrix, World War II, And dozens of other classics of texts that somehow make sense about adversity, so I have a game for you!

13 guardsPlaying like a point-and-click adventure with branching dialogue options is only half the battle. emergence. It’s a whole box full of bugs to collect in our initial review, but a note on the switch ports: the strategy element looks a bit quirky on a 4K TV, but fits perfectly into the switch’s smallest portable screen.

I’m tired of saying it’s a game that fits the Switch, but this game fits the Switch in a different way than usual. It’s great to be able to play this text-heavy game on the go, but what makes the Switch the perfect home for the 13 Sentinels is the ability to switch between handheld mode and TV mode. It’s perfect for portability if you’re battling bots or combing through character sequences for clues. However, when starting a new story, I prefer the TV mode, which projects the game’s beautiful hand-drawn graphics onto a larger screen. It is not recommended to play the entire game on a TV as you did on the PS4 version. However, I do recommend taking a break from handheld mode from time to time to truly appreciate how beautiful this game is.

There is more to be said about this game. It’s like a tortoise’s tower, winding and never collapsing under the weight of every story. Reading more can ruin the fun, but once you start playing, you’ll end up reading a lot. I’ve written so much about why this game means the world to me. Now I’ll decide whether to play or not.

Alright, that’s great, but why should anyone actually play this game unrelated to an established franchise, superhero, or general IP? Because you’re unlikely to play anything that’s both as polished as this batshit – in the best possible way.
The story is set in 1984, with a handful of points in the past and future, as early as 1945 and as late as… well, I’m not going to spoil that for you. You play through the adventures of 13 characters in episodic chunks in any order you choose. Gradually, you will learn about their teenage life, including their romances, rivals, motivations, and fantasies. And you’ll find out why they must pilot mechs to fight kaiju in the mysterious far future.
The game doesn’t reference or borrow from science fiction, so much so that it rips entire ideas out of the sci-fi canon, grafting them onto monstrous mega-fiction.
