9 new movies and shows to watch this weekend on Netflix, HBO Max, Paramount Plus and more
Want to know what to watch this weekend? May is already off to a good start in terms of streaming, thanks to tons of new movies and shows. Netflix, HBO Max, Peacock and other streaming services.
The debuting new series features Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, another entry in the final Frontiers franchise, and the Mike Myers comedy The Pentaverate. Also, two fan-favorite games, Season 2 of Wilds and Season 2 of Girls5eva, are back.
On the blackboard this weekend is also a virtual version of The Staircase, OG’s real-life crime documentary series about the sensationalistic case of Michael Peterson. Colin Firth played the role of a writer accused of murdering her wife, Kathleen. If you don’t fully understand the real crime, Big Conn records the outrageous social security fraud of a Kentucky attorney.
Here is a guide to what to see this weekend.
The Staircase (HBO Max)
Before the serialization, before the jinx, before the murder, there were stairs. A true crime documentary series chronicles the events of writer Michael Peterson. Michael Peterson was charged and later convicted of murdering his wife Kathleen. (He claimed that her death was caused by a fall from a staircase.) French film producer Jean-Xavier de Lestrade had a very close relationship with Peterson, his family and his legal team, so the resulting footage was very compelling.
Now The Staircase is being fictionalized in a star-studded docudrama. Colin Firth plays Michael, Toni Collette plays Kathleen, and Sophie Turner plays daughter Margaret. The documentary writer is also a character, as this series is not a crime thriller, but an exploration of the impact storytelling has on subjectivity.

Star Trek: Strange New World (Paramount Plus)
The Star Trek universe has been productive in recent years. Strange New World is the sixth and seventh series in the Star Trek series to debut on Paramount Plus (and its predecessor, CBS All Access). Derived from Discovery, the show represents a return to the more classic Trek with a beloved ship, familiar characters, and simple “Adventures of the Week” storytelling.
Anson Mount and Ethan Peck reprise their roles in Discovery as USS Enterprise Captains Christopher Pike and Spock, respectively. As fans know, Pike was the captain of the ship before James T. Kirk (who will appear in Season 2). Join aka First Mate Una Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) and cadet Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding) as they explore the bizarre new worlds of names scattered across the galaxy.

Girls5eva Season 2 (The Peacock)
One Hit Wonder girl group is back. And they’re hoping to make two hits. Maybe more than that. Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry), Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Gloria (Paula Pell), and Summer (Busy Philipps) went to the studio to record their new album, but they wrote 12 songs and had less than six weeks to record.
In the meantime, they are all still trying to evolve into humans. Summer wants to divorce Kev and Gloria wants to get her ex-wife Caroline back. Wickie is more egotistical than ever and obsessed with Raya (never change Wickie). Season 2 doesn’t lack cynical jingles about celebrities and the entertainment world, but is often balanced by sweet moments of bonding between women. And get ready to listen to new music like “Big Pussy Energy”. It has summer song potential!

But now Myers is making a comeback with 8x. He created and played eight characters in Pentaverate, based on So I Married on A Ax Murderer’s one-off joke.
It was a joke about the secret society of five men who move the world. Myers is Ken Scarborough, a Canadian journalist on a quest to uncover the truth and potentially save the world. He is also an American conspiracy theorist and Pentaverate leader Lord Lordington, an Australian media mogul, a former Russian oligarch, a far-right radio host, a tech genius, and a former rock band executive. But Myers isn’t the only face you’ll see. He also contributed to the comedy hijinks by recruiting Ken Jung, Keegan-Michael Key, Debi Mazar and Rob Low.

The Wilds Season 2 (Prime Video)
Prior to Yellowjackets, The Wilds told the story of a group of teenage girls stranded together after a plane crash. They discover that they are part of a social experiment conducted by mad scientist Gretchen (Rachel Griffiths). The season 1 finale brought a crazy new twist. There was another island filled with stranded teenagers.
Season 2 spends a lot of time exploring the boys’ island experiences and their backstory. Simply put, they react to idle behavior very differently than girls. But the focus still remains on the trials and tribulations of girls who grow up big. As you deal with trauma and grief, your inner strength deepens. And not everything is entirely bleak as Tony and Shelby continue their new romance.
