Adult Sonic The Hedgehog Coloring Book Coming This Fall

Sega is teaming up with Insight Editions to produce an adult-aimed Sonic The Hedgehog coloring book later this year. Sonic has built a strong fanbase of players young and old over the past 30 years – and has been featured in all manner of strange merchandise like LEGO sets, comics, and even the occasional Sonic The Hedgehog-branded energy drink. Gaming-wise, Sonic has no less than two interactive adventures on the horizon for 2022: Sonic Origins, which is a retro collection of titles from the Blue Blur’s side-scrolling 90s heyday, and Sonic Frontiers, a brand-new 3D platformer that will see Sega’s favorite hypersonic hedgehog speeding through the ruins of an ancient civilization in a story penned by longtime Sonic The Hedgehog comic scribe Ian Flynn.

Meanwhile, publishing company Insight Editions is no stranger to licensed books based on popular video game properties, ranging from official art books for titles like Borderlands 3 to children’s adaptations of Mature-rated games like God Of War (2018). Recently, the publisher raised many eyebrows by partnering with 343 Industries for an official Halo cookbook, much to the dismay of players who would have rather gotten an update for Halo: Infinite. Now, Insight Editions is giving gamers something they didn’t see coming but which seems to make the most sense in hindsight: a Sonic The Hedgehog coloring book for grown-ups.

Earlier this week, the IDWSonicNews Twitter account announced Insight Editions is publishing Sonic the Hedgehog: The Official Adult Coloring Book, which is now available to pre-order on Amazon (via The Gamer). This officially licensed book is set to release on October 25, costs $12.99, and consists of 64 monochrome pages featuring Sonic and his supporting cast that adult fans can color in however they wish. Some Sonic The Hedgehog fans in the comment section were taken aback by the use of the word “adult” in the title of this new Sonic coloring book, but others have pointed out that this simply means that the pictures contained within are too complex for younger audiences, and that the book likely contains no NSFW material.

Adult-themed coloring books are a popular pastime for many, ranging from bizarre books based on celebrities like Justin Bieber to the surprisingly classy ones inspired by the historical Outlander fantasy series. There have been plenty of video game-based coloring books as well, such as a collection of free Tomb Raider coloring sheets released to commemorate the series’ 25th-anniversary last year. There was even a coloring book featuring The Last Of Us, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Uncharted, with the proceeds going to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals under the Extra Life program.

Sonic The Hedgehog is a natural fit for coloring books given the franchise’s cast of brightly-colored anthropomorphic animals, and there have been several Sonic-themed coloring books aimed at children. However, this fall’s Sonic the Hedgehog: The Official Adult Coloring Book is the first one of its kind, and will provide older fans the chance to color in some of their favorite Sonic characters and even create a few alternate OC designs – a handy way to pass the time while waiting for the next Sonic The Hedgehog game.
