All-star tribute to the last George Pérez to be published in all DC June titles

DC's Birthday Tribute to George Perez

Throughout June, DC is celebrating the 68th birthday of legendary comic book creator George Pérez with a special spread honoring one of the comics community’s most beloved characters.

Perez died on May 6, 2022.

Described by an all-star artist roster that spans generations, including Alex Ross, Jim Lee, José Luis García-López, Todd McFarlane, Colleen Doran, Dave Gibbons, Dan Jurgens and more, the images show every DC character Pérez at its best. He is known for painting his career in homage to his signature style. The image also shows a deathstroke drawn by García-López and Perez himself surrounded by New Teen Titans.

This spread appears in all DC magazines sold in June to celebrate Pérez’s birthday on June 9th. A separate page is also included with keys identifying the related characters and artists. Both images can be seen below.

Each artist worked with a layout designed by Jürgens and the entire image was colored in Hi-Fi.

“It was an honor to be asked to come up with a design and layout that honors George Pérez and his many incredible contributions to DC Comics,” Dan Jurgens said at DC’s April announcement.

“I was impressed from the first time I saw George’s work and I was fortunate to work with him in a variety of capacities on several projects. More importantly, I could see how George treats his fans and readers, always smiling, sociable and friendly. It was great to see this cover come to life and I’m sure everyone who contributed will be of the same mind.”

The tribute image will be included in all of DC’s June titles as well as serving as a cover variant for Dark Crisis #7, the finale of the monthly event series starting in June.

To raise money for one of Pérez’s most popular charities, the Hero Initiative is selling a special version of the cover. Pérez was a founding member of the Hero Initiative Board of Directors, chaired the Payments Committee, and for many years was a familiar face at what was once the largest single fundraising event.

“The Heroes Initiative is one of my greatest prides,” Pérez told Newsarama late last year.

Each issue of Dark Crisis includes a transforming cover highlighting the earliest DC Crisis events in DC history, starting with Marv Wolfman from the first issue and Crisis on Infinite Earth by Pérez.

DC has promised artwork and more details on the cover of the metamorphosis in the coming weeks.

“George Pérez is one of my favorite comic book narrators. To say he’s a ‘great artist’ is overly understated,” said Joshua Williamson, author of Dark Crisis. “His work on the original Crisis of Infinite Earth inspired my love for DC Comics a lot. It’s no lie to see DC editors crafting this incredible piece of work with so many great legendary artists celebrating George. It was inspiring. And now I am honored to receive this accolade on the cover of Dark Crisis.”

In December 2021, Pérez announced to the comics community that she had been diagnosed with terminal cancer, and plans to spend the rest of the day celebrating the comics with friends, co-creators, and fans who will continue to live in thousands of formers. And millions of the latter.

DC’s birthday tribute is the latest attempt to celebrate his announcement and death on May 6. On April 21st, Marvel announced a special tribute to Pérez in Avengers #55, and last month DC, Marvel and the Hero Initiative teamed up to deliver a new limited-edition collectible from the JLA/Avengers that has been out of print for years.
