The request submitted to the Alberta Labor Relations Commission on April 20 has a particular impact on the staff supporting BioWare in the studio’s Edmonton office. The request was originally leaked to Reddit, and a board spokesperson confirmed the existence of the request in an email sent to GamesRadar without further comment.
Workers are employed by the United Food and Commercial Workers Canada Union, Local No. 401 is Keywords Studios BC, Inc. Organized to become a certified negotiator on an employee level. If the board determines that the consent meets the requirement of at least 40% support from the employees wishing to become members, the employee must appeal by May 3.
This comes amid a growing movement for unions in the video game industry.
