CNN Plus is dead — after less than a month [Update]
We hope you didn’t get CNN Plus as a lifetime rebate deal. Those who sign up for the service for $5.99 per month can save 50% as long as they keep their accounts open. Unfortunately CNN Plus is now submerged. And in less than a month, it collapsed.
This news was released by parent company Warner Bros. It’s from Variety, where Discovery reported “shutting down” CNN Plus. According to an interview with Variety, “two people who know the matter very well,” staff like audiences and readers around the world are getting the details today. Then, CNN confirmed the news itself, announcing on March 29 that the service would end on April 30, a month after its debut.
This is the latest bad news in the streaming media landscape, days after Netflix’s revenue announced its first subscriber loss of its fiscal quarter. The big red streaming machine lost over 200,000 subscribers in Q1 2022.
But CNN Plus executives probably wanted to lose so many subscribers. According to a report by Sarah Fisher of Axios, CNN Plus had “about 150,000 subscribers” earlier this week.
To update: CNN has confirmed that CNN Plus will be shut down and makes the following statement:
“In the complex streaming marketplace, consumers want simplicity and all-in-one services that deliver better experiences and value than standalone products, and companies want more sustainable business models that will fuel our future investments in great journalism and storytelling. “He said. Analysis: What’s Wrong with CNN Plus?
The early downfall of CNN Plus seems to be an example of providing the wrong service at the wrong time. Like CNN, the service debuted at a time when competition for the best streaming services was in full swing.
Too much competition: Currently, HBO Max is on the rise, Netflix is struggling to get subscribers, and Peacock and Paramount Plus are providing live events and news. This market is definitely saturated.
Damn, Apple TV Plus is thriving now with shows like Severance, The Afterparty, and Pachinko, after waiting a while for a big hit and then waiting for non-Ted Lasso likes again. It was also the first streaming service to win an Academy Award for Best Picture for CODA. But we’ve come this far because Apple has been working on it for a few quiet months.

New Management: CNN added Warner Bros. through an acquisition. One of many brands in the Discovery Empire. However, new bosses appear with the takeover, and those bosses may have higher standards. Fischer’s report, published in Axios, seems to be true, as CNN executives point out that while “CNN Plus launches successfully”, “when the discovery executives disagree” is not enough.
The same executives plan to merge HBO Max and Discovery Plus, and we could see CNN content entering this new super service.
Content issues: CNN Plus has a problem I call the “ESPN Plus problem”. ESPN Plus was released without an actual live ESPN channel and has not yet been added. CNN Plus did the same thing and didn’t provide the core qualities that people associate with brands.
Nevertheless, ESPN Plus is a must-watch for UFC fans, as it is home to the UFC PPV. Likewise, Peacock is now a must-see movie for WWE fans after gaining permission to stream live events and back catalogs from World Wrestling Entertainment.
If you like CNN, you can only watch CNN, so why should you buy CNN Plus? The promotional content suggested that CNN fans got to know more of their favorite characters, including Don Lemon and Anderson Cooper. And that’s why CNN Plus looks like a niche service that appeals to an avid audience.

Analysis: What went wrong with CNN Plus?
The early demise of CNN Plus seems to be a case of the wrong service at the wrong time. As big a deal as CNN is, the service debuted during the peak of competition among the best streaming services.
Too much competition: Right now, HBO Max is on the rise, Netflix is having a hard time keeping subscribers, and Peacock and Paramount Plus offer live events and news. This market is inarguably over-saturated.
Heck, Apple TV Plus — after a while of waiting for a big hit, and then another while of waiting for something people love that isn’t than Ted Lasso — is thriving at the moment, with shows such as Severance, The Afterparty and Pachinko. It even won the Best Picture Oscar, a first for a streaming service, for CODA. But it only made it this far because Apple was more than happy to let things ride in the lull months.
