Disney+ Expects Most Subscribers To Opt For Cheaper Ad-Based Plan

Even with their anticipation that more users will opt for the lower-cost option, Disney still expects to make greater revenue per subscribers. This is because they will be selling advertising space to companies at a premium price, which will more than make up for the difference in subscription plan pricing. Their plan does seem sturdy, based on evidence from Hulu, as well as the fact that companies will likely be very eager for advertising space on Disney’s booming streaming service. As of now, pricing and a specific launch date has not yet been released by Disney+. Still, Disney+ has promised to limit commercials with the ad-based plan. For example, the ads will add up to less than 4 minutes per hour and won’t appear in programs designed for very young children.

Needless to say, Disney+ seems pretty confident in their upcoming ad-based plan. Meanwhile, with their examination of Hulu’s performance, they seem to have the evidence and indicators they need to predict the plan’s success. At the same time, this will largely ride on how much they intend to reduce the cost of the ad-based plan. The difference between Hulu and Disney, is that Disney’s ad-free plan is already cheaper to begin with. Hulu’s ad-free plan is a whopping $12.99, resulting in a six-dollar difference between their ad-supported plan, which costs $6.99. With $7.99 being the starting price, it isn’t likely Disney would be able to lower their ad-supported plan to less than $4.99 a month. This may lead some Disney+ subscribers to question if the difference of a few dollars is really worth it. It remains to be seen if Disney+ can really make their ad-supported plan more appealing to their future subscribers than the regular plan.
