Doctor Who Reveals the First Time the TARDIS Turned Into a Police Box

The Doctor Who franchise has finally revealed the first time the TARDIS turned into a police box. There is a tremendous irony in the fact that the Doctor’s is one of the last TARDISes in existence; the battered old Type Forty is old-fashioned and temperamental, so much so that the Doctor struggles to get his ship to take him wherever he or she wants to go. Its most famous malfunction, of course, is the broken Chameleon Circuit that means it is stuck in the shape of a police box.
The TARDIS is a marvel of transdimensional engineering, and because its insides exist on a different dimensional plane to its exterior, in theory it can take any form. For 60 years viewers believed the Chameleon Circuit had broken in the first Doctor Who story, “An Unearthly Child,” in which the Doctor hurriedly left Shoreditch in 1963. Doctor Who season 12 recently revealed that was not the case, however, introducing Jo Martin’s Fugitive Doctor – an incarnation who predated William Hartnell, and whose TARDIS was already stuck in the familiar shape of a Police Box.

The Doctor Who: Free Comic Book Day special, written by Jody Houser and with art by Roberta Ingranata and Warina Sahadewa, finally reveals the first time the TARDIS took on this form. It features a delightful short story in which Jo Martin’s forgotten Doctor visits Earth for the first time, arriving in England in 1962. The TARDIS disguises itself as a police box – an entirely appropriate appearance, given they were commonplace in the country at the time.
According to the Doctor Who Free Comic Book Day special, the Fugitive Doctor’s memories are the real reason the Doctor loves Earth. The Doctor is helped by a group of children, and decides that this backwater planet is quite delightful. The memories of this incarnation may have been erased, but they presumably leave a deep subconscious impression on future Doctors. It’s surely no coincidence that William Hartnell’s First Doctor arrives on Earth just a year after this visit. He chooses to settle there with his granddaughter Susan, disposing of the ancient Gallifreyan weapon known as the Hand of Omega on Earth, and seems to have come close to considering the planet an unlikely home. It is a decision that future versions of the Doctor would repeat.

Earth must have left a similarly deep impression on the TARDIS, with the Doctor’s ship deciding to spirit the time traveler back to the planet on countless occasions. This, perhaps, is the real reason the TARDIS has reverted to this form; because it is the shape it took on when it visited this planet for the first time, and fell in love with it as much as the Doctor did. Hopefully the full story of the TARDIS will be revealed in Titan’s upcoming Doctor Who Origins miniseries, a Doctor Who story that will spin out of this story.
