Dragon Ball’s Piccolo Gets Hilarious Assassination Classroom Redesign

A hilarious reimagining of Dragon Ball’s Piccolo places him in the role of Assassination Classroom’s Koro-Sensei. This artistic rendition of Dragon Ball Volume 20 for the Dragon Ball Super Gallery Project is illustrated by Yusei Matsui. This cover is one of the most humorous and stylistically different variations yet.

This is the eleventh cover in the Dragon Ball Super Gallery Project, out of forty-two total volumes. Other mangaka that have done covers for this project have included Tite Kubo, Osamu Akimoto, Ryuhei Tamura, Tatsuki Fujimoto, Koyoharu Gotouge, Shinohara Kenta, Tatsuya Endo, Hiroshi Shiibashi, and Mitsutoshi Shimabukuro. Each month, a new reimagined Dragon Ball cover is revealed. Last month’s featured Goku and Vegeta on Volume 19. Now, Piccolo and Gohan are getting an amazing makeover.

On Twitter, Shonen Jump News shared the latest reimagined cover for the Dragon Ball Super Gallery Project. The cover shows Piccolo with a face much different than his own. While he is still green, he more closely resembles Koro-Sensei. The same is true of Gohan, who stands in the background, though he is Koro-Sensei’s traditional yellow color. Gohan also has the teacher’s tentacles, while Piccolo’s body does not show this detail, mirroring the original cover very well. Fans of Dragon Ball and Assassination Classroom are getting far more Koro-Sensei than they may have thought possible.

Assassination Classroom was published in Weekly Shōnen Jump from 2012 to 2016. The series ran for twenty-one volumes and was a best-selling series at its time of release. It had a spin-off manga that released from 2015 to 2019, titled, Koro Sensei Quest. Koro-Sensei is definitely a fan-favorite character and it’s no surprise that Piccolo would be likened to him in this cover considering the mentor role the Namekian plays towards Gohan within Dragon Ball. The funnier thing is the lack of fierceness Piccolo’s facial expression has now that he has been transformed into Assassination Classroom’s art styleAnother funny detail is that his own student mirrors his image as Koro-Sensei, since the teacher’s pupils are humans. Instead of maintaining the visual dynamics of this relationship, Matsui molds both visible Dragon Ball character in Koro-Sensei’s image. Were there more characters present, it seems highly likely that Goku, Vegeta, and others would similarly have been made to resemble the incredible assassin.

Like the covers for Volumes 2, 6, 9, 11, 15, 27, and 38, this cover largely mirrors the original. It maintains the same basic composition, while adjusting the art style to match that of the mangakas’ iconic works and styles. This is contrary to the covers for Dragon Ball Volumes 19, 28, and 32, where either the characters and composition have been altered, or the mangaka doing the reimagining has replaced Dragon Ball’s characters with their own. Thus far, there has been no particular order to the covers’ releases, making it particularly fun to see which volumes are matched to which mangakas each month. In addition to Assassination Classroom, Yusei Matsui also created Neuro: Supernatural Detective and a few one-shots. Currently, he is working on The Elusive Samurai, which is being serialized in Weekly Shōnen Jump. Matsui’s Assassination Classroom stylized Piccolo for Dragon Ball’s upcoming anniversary is humorously amazing, bringing two incredible teachers into one combined existence.
