Dying Light Team Announces Open-World Fantasy RPG With Former CDPR Devs

Techland, the developer of Dying Light and Dying Light 2, has announced the development of a brand-new open-world fantasy role-playing game alongside former CD Projekt Red developers. Since 1991 the Polish game studio has developed several popular franchises, including Call of JuarezDead Island and Dying Light. While Techland has announced 5 years of Dying Light 2 support, the developer also has an exciting new title in the works.

Released back in February, Dying Light 2 combines intense parkour, zombie survival and melee combat to create a truly unique experience. Following the first game, the recently-released sequel takes players to the walled city of Villedor following an undead apocalypse. Cast as Aiden Caldwell, a traveler searching for his sister Mia, the player must traverse the city and battle the undead hordes on a quest survive and thrive. Dying Light 2 focuses on close-quarters combat over first-person shooter mechanics, with players using improvised weapons to fend off their flesh-eating foes. Post-launch support, like the recent 1.2 update for Dying Light 2, is planned to continue improving and exposing the experience into 2027.

Alongside supporting Dying Light 2, a twitter post from Techland reveals that the developer is also working on an open-world action role-playing game. A report from IGN reveals that the newly-announced title, set in a fascinating new fantasy setting, has recruited form CD Projekt Red staff to create the project. Narrative director Karolina Stachyra and narrative lead Arkadiusz Borowik both worked on Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and Witcher 3: Wild Hunt before joining Techland. A piece of concept art, which portrays ancient ruins sitting nestled in a gorgeous forest next to a waterfall, sheds some light on the game’s setting.

While Techland’s fantasy RPG is likely years away, a recent interview with Dying Light 2 Lead Game Designer Tymon Smektała may hint at what gamers can expect from the project. The interview reveals that Techland always puts gameplay first, meaning that mechanics and features often take precedence over narrative or graphics. Smektala also believes that the main character in Dying Light 2 starts out too weak, expressing that the protagonist should start with stronger or more varied abilities in future games. While Smektala talks about this in the context of a potential Dying Light 3, the idea could certainly carry into Techland’s fantasy RPG.

Techland is know for its first-person shooters and zombie survival games, but the developer’s next project will take players to an open-world fantasy setting for some role-play. Almost nothing is known about the game, but concept art and the involvement of former CD Projekt Red staff bodes well for the authenticity of the title’s fantasy world. With Dying Light 2 post-launch support set to conclude in 2027, only time will tell when players can explore Techland’s next experience.

Dying Light 2 is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
