When the Google Pixel 6a was officially launched yesterday, I only had one question in mind. Where will it be sold? The Google I/O presentation kept that query open, but the good news is that the Pixel 6a ships to a much wider range of countries than the Pixel 5a.
After a disappointing move last year, Google decided to sell the Pixel 5a only in Japan and the US. However, according to Google’s device availability page, the Pixel 6a is in 12 countries where Google is already selling Pixel 6 phones. This also applies to Puerto Rico, where you don’t currently have access to a Pixel 6 or Pixel 6 Pro like the rest of the US. This is good news for those who have been left out of the fun of Google Tensor.
Google’s decision to limit the availability of the Pixel 5a is somewhat understandable given the shipping issues and global chip shortages caused by the coronavirus pandemic. But at a time when the cost of living is rising, it’s good that Google has made cheaper phones available to users who may need to replace an aging or broken phone.
In this segment of the smartphone market, buyers will not be able to choose devices such as the iPhone SE (2022), Samsung Galaxy A53, OnePlus Nord 2 or OnePlus Nord N20. However, more choices are always better, as more competition for user attention and money (in theory) leads to a better product overall.
Especially good for the Pixel 6a. That’s because Google is storing a lot of fun software tricks for their own phones that aren’t put into Android. This includes Live Translation, which lets you talk to others in real time, or Magic Eraser Edit, which lets you recolor or remove photo-destroying objects.
Low availability was probably the Pixel 5a’s biggest problem, but there were other glitches as well. Unfortunately, the issue of no wireless charging on the Pixel 6a has not been resolved. Also, the fingerprint sensor built into the Pixel 6a’s display has moved away from the back of previous phones. The Pixel 6’s sensor has proven to be slow.
But overall we are very optimistic about Google’s new phone. In fact, the Pixel 6a could blow up the iPhone SE with a bigger display and a more powerful camera system. Stay tuned for our full review later this summer.
