Google TV Is Finally Getting Personalized User Profiles

After an inordinate delay, Google is finally rolling out personalized user profiles for Google TV. The feature was first announced last October and was expected to be released before the end of 2021. However, it was delayed indefinitely without any explanation, with no word on when it would be available on supported Chromecasts and compatible televisions. Alongside user profiles, Google also announced personalized screensavers, which were rolled out earlier this month, indicating that the ‘profiles’ feature might finally be ready for prime time.

Often mistaken as a replacement for Android TV, Google TV is a software layer running on top of vanilla Android TV. It is part of the company’s efforts to better compete with Roku and Amazon’s Fire TV. Not unlike how custom launchers can change the look and feel of an Android device without actually changing the underlying operating system, Google TV offers an elevated Android TV experience with a more refined design and AI-based personalized content.

In a press release announcing the rollout of personalized profiles on Google TV, the company said that the feature would make it easier for everyone in a household to get customized content based on their viewing habits. According to the company, the individualized content would include customized movie recommendations, personal watchlists, and Google Assistant responses. In addition, the new feature would also allow children to set up a ‘Kids Profile’ to let them access family-friendly movies and TV shows under their parents’ guidance.

Personalized Watchlists And Recommendations For Each Profile

With the rollout of the new feature, each Google account added to a device would have its own watchlist. This would allow users to add any new show or movie to that list and save it for later. The new feature will also enable Google Assistant to offer differentiated recommendations to each user. For example, when asked ‘What should I watch’ or ‘Show me my day,’ Google Assistant will be able to offer personalized answers to each user based on their prior activities on the device.

One of the best new aspects of the new feature is that users won’t have to work too hard to set up each new profile individually from scratch. According to Google, the same downloaded apps will work across all profiles and with the same app login details. This, however, won’t apply to kids’ profiles, which have to be set up separately for obvious safety reasons. Personalized profiles are being rolled out in a phased manner, and will be available to all users in the next few weeks.
