Grey’s Anatomy Star Sara Ramírez Reveals Why They Left The Show

It makes sense Ramírez exited the show when they did. Ten years is a long time to play any character, let alone one as visible as Callie. For the majority of Ramírez’s time on Grey’s Anatomy, Callie played a major role, often in multiple storylines at once. Though the character’s scenes were arguably a bit lighter in the beginning, as Callie went through her divorce and custody battle with Arizona and also grieved her best friend Mark, Ramírez received increasingly heavy, emotional scenes that must have been taxing to film.
Ramírez also makes a good point about how easily an actor can lose themselves in a character. In an hour-long drama like Grey’s Anatomy, the show’s stars are working punishingly long hours for most of the year. After a decade of doing that, it’s understandable that the line between actor and fictional character becomes a bit blurry. It doesn’t help that viewers often treat the two as indistinguishable, sometimes struggling to separate the real person from the character they love on-screen. All in all, it sounds like Ramírez made the right call in exiting the show when they did. Luckily, they’ve also said they would be open to returning to Grey’s Anatomy as Callie at some point in the future. Hopefully, that comes to fruition before the series ends.
