How BOTW 2 Could Bring Back Majora’s Happy Mask Salesman

It would be a missed opportunity to not have the Happy Mask Salesman return as an NPC quest giver in Breath of the Wild 2. The Happy Mask Salesman is a returning Ocarina of Time character in Majora’s Mask. In both of his appearances, the Salesman was a quest giver, giving Link an innocuous mask delivery quest in Ocarina of Time and becoming the main quest giver for Link’s quest in Majora’s Mask. Thus it would make sense for the Salesman to return as giver of quests. There are many different avenues for such a quest, perhaps even one involving the return of Majora’s Mask as an optional boss. With the BOTW extra DLCs, it is possible players could see the Salesman return in a much bigger role, having him become the central figure in a manipulative questline that has him leading Link towards a mask-related goal.

While the Majora’s Mask iteration is certainly the more memorable appearance, the Happy Mask Salesman does not have to be the creepy, mood-shifting manipulator he was in that game. The Salesman could also just do his namesake, selling the player cosmetic or magical masks in much the same way the jeweled headdresses or monster masks functioned in Breath of the Wild. Perhaps this could mark the return of the speed-increasing Bunny Hood from Majora’s Mask to BOTW 2. He could even be a traveling salesman, allowing him to assume his classic Majora’s Mask appearance with the large pack laden with creepy masks. In this respect, he could take a page from his role in Ocarina of Time, becoming a kindly (if stressed) shopkeeper.

In whatever respect the Happy Mask Salesman may return, it would be a welcome sight. Not only would it pay homage to an obscure but memorable NPC from the classic games but it could be a novel way to introduce new masks to BOTW 2. While these aspirations may be far-fetched, stranger things have happened in BOTW. After all, Link can wear a Nintendo Switch shirt and ride a motorcycle in BOTW, so an unhinged mask salesman doesn’t seem too out of the realm of possibility. It would be a welcome sight to see more homages to Majora’s Mask in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2, and the Happy Mask Salesman would be the perfect callback.
