How to complete the Destiny 2 Looping Catalyst Rhulk challenge in Vow of the Disciple

Destiny 2 Apprentice Rhulk Raid Vows Bungie Images

If you can complete the Destiny 2 Looping Catalyst challenge, you can earn extra loot by defeating Rhulk in Heist of the Apprentice’s Oath. Killing a Rhulk usually requires a lot of coordination, careful movement, and good damage, so adding an extra layer on top of it can be pretty difficult, but Looping Catalyst is actually pretty easy. If you and your raid team want to complete the Destiny 2 Looping Catalyst challenge, below is everything you need to know.

How to Complete the Destiny 2 Looping Catalyst Challenge

Here’s a rough overview of how to complete the Looping Catalyst challenge while fighting the Rhulk.

  1. Destroy the crystal to get the power drain buff.
  2. Reading symbols that appear to find matching pairs
  3. Converting suction power to divergent power using Rhulk’s quad laser
  4. With the symbol identified in 2, deposit the radiating power on your totem.
  5. Repeat this 6 times until Rhulk’s bladder is fully pushed back.

Obviously there’s more to it than that, so we’ll go into more detail below.

This will allow your team to perfectly complete the first stage of the Rhulk boss battle, which also completes the Destiny 2 Looping Catalyst challenge.

  1. First, Player 1 gets the Leeching Force buff by standing on the central slab and destroying the large crystal above the Rhulk.
  2. Player 1 remains on the plate and summons two small crystals on either side of Rhulk. Players 2 and 3 must each destroy crystals to gain Leeching Force and remove them from Player 1. Player 1 can now escape from the center slab.
  3. Now all players have to focus on killing the two Glyphkeepers that will appear on the left and right side of the arena. Players 5 and 6 should focus solely on eliminating enemies to protect their teammates for the rest of this phase.
  4. When Glyph Wardens dies, the player must read the two sets of symbols displayed above nearby pillars to see which symbols are the same in both sets. Be sure to remember this symbol for the rest of this step!
  5. Player 2 must follow where Rhulk teleports and dive into a quad laser beam attack to convert his Leeching Force buff into an Emanating Force. All other players, especially other players with Leeching Force, should avoid this attack.
  6. Player 4 must now read the symbols on the 6 totems in the arena and inform Player 2 with the previous common symbol. Player 2 must then run to the correct totem and deposit the power buff it emits.
  7. Meanwhile, Player 3 with the Leeching Force now needs to stand on the central slab and spawn two more small crystals that must be destroyed by Player 2 after placing Emanating Force and Player 1. This will return the Leeching Force to players 1 and 2, allowing player 3 to get off center plate.
  8. Go back to step 5 and repeat this step. Remember that players 1 and 3 switch roles for each Emanating Force they are deployed to. You can deploy a total of 6 Emanating Force buffs and do the following until Rhulk’s bladder is completely pushed back. Begin the second stage of the boss fight against the student’s vow.
  9. Optional Bonus Stage: After the team sets the fourth radiated force buff, players 2 and 3 can both get the radiating power from Rhulk’s laser and player 4 can search for two totems with the correct symbols. Emanating Force players can save time by applying the 5th and 6th buffs simultaneously. Once the 6 Emanating Forces are deployed, the next phase of the Battle of Rhulk will begin, so the Looping Catalyst challenge will not fail.

If the Leeching Force is completely lost at this stage, the team will have to swipe to reset the challenge and start the Rhulk fight again. That’s because another big fix appears on top of Rhulk and fails the Looping Catalyst challenge. Leeching Force can be completely lost by both Leeching Force players dying or by standing on Rhulk’s Beam Attack and switching the buff to Emanating Force. To keep things simple and minimize the risk of failing the Destiny 2 Looping Catalyst challenge, we recommend depositing the Emanating Force buff in one go.

This is just one of three phases that repeat until either Rhulk dies or rages and kills the team immediately. Therefore, you will need to perform these steps several times before you can defeat Rhulk and complete the challenge. Luckily, you can do the next phase and damage phase normally in Rhulk combat, and after the damage phase the Rhulk will become immune and return to phase 1.

Here’s how your team can run the first phase of the Rhulk boss fight with no mistakes, which will also complete the Destiny 2 Looping Catalyst challenge.
To start things off, Player 1 stands on the central plate and destroys the big crystal above Rhulk to get the Leeching Force buff.
Player 1 remains on the plate to summon two smaller crystals on either side of Rhulk. Players 2 and 3 must destroy a crystal each to both get Leeching Force and remove it from Player 1, who can now step off the central plate.
All players must now focus on killing the two Glyphkeepers that will appear on the left and right sides of the arena. Players 5 and 6 should only focus on clearing enemies for the rest of this phase to protect their teammates.
Once the Glyphkeepers are dead, the players need to read the two sets of symbols that appear above the nearby pillars and determine which symbol is the same across both sets – you’ll need to remember it for the rest of this phase!
Player 2 needs to follow where Rhulk teleports and jump inside his quad-laser beam attack to convert their Leeching Force buff into Emanating Force. All other players must avoid this attack, especially the other player with Leeching Force.
Player 4 must now read the symbols on the six totems around the arena and tell Player 2 which one has the common symbol from earlier on it. Player 2 then needs to run up to the correct totem and deposit their Emanating Force buff.
Meanwhile, Player 3, who has Leeching Force, must now stand on the central plate to summon two more small crystals which need to be destroyed by Player 2 after they’ve deposited their Emanating Force and Player 1. This will give Leeching Force back to Players 1 and 2, and Player 3 can step off the central plate.
Go back to step 5 and repeat these steps – bear in mind that Players 1 and 3 will switch their roles for each Emanating Force that gets deposited – until you’ve deposited six Emanating Force buffs in total and Rhulk’s bubble has been pushed all the way back, allowing you to begin phase two of the Vow of the Disciple boss fight.
Bonus optional step: After your team deposits the fourth Emanating Force buff, Players 2 and 3 can both get Emanating Force from Rhulk’s laser while Player 4 looks for the two totems with the correct symbol. The Emanating Force players can then deposit the fifth and sixth buffs simultaneously to save time. This will not fail the Looping Catalyst challenge as the next phase of the Rhulk fight will start as soon as six Emanating Forces have been deposited.

Your team will need to wipe to reset the challenge and start the Rhulk fight again if Leeching Force is entirely lost during this phase, as it will spawn another big crystal above Rhulk, causing you to fail the Looping Catalyst challenge. Leeching Force can be lost entirely either through both Leeching Force players dying, or both players converting the buff into Emanating Force by standing in Rhulk’s beam attack. To keep things simple and minimize the risk of failing the Destiny 2 Looping Catalyst challenge, we recommend you deposit one Emanating Force buff at a time.
Remember, this is just one of three phases that repeat until Rhulk dies or becomes Enraged and insta-kills the team, so you’ll need to follow these steps several times to defeat Rhulk and complete the challenge. Thankfully, you can do the next phase and the damage phase for the Rhulk fight normally, and then you’ll be back at step 1 once Rhulk has become immune after the damage phase.
