How to Control Lights With Alexa

How does Alexa turn on the lights?

Amazon Echo speakers aren’t just for playing music and asking questions to Alexa. You can use your voice assistant to control lights and other smart home products. If you’re looking to add Alexa-controlled lighting to your home, it’s super easy.

How do Alexa-controlled lights work?

There are many ways to get started with smart lighting. You can control regular ceiling lights by purchasing a smart light bulb, plugging a regular lamp into a smart socket, or installing a smart switch on the wall.

There are two types of smart light bulbs. A light bulb that has built-in Wi-Fi and works on its own (eg LIFX) or that needs to be connected to a smart hub (usually using the Zigbee wireless networking standard). Philips Hue is perhaps the best example of a hub-based lighting system.

Then there are smart sockets. For example, if you want to control a floor lamp, Kasa is one of many companies that sells smart plugs that allow you to remotely control anything you plug in. And if you prefer to control the “dumb” bulbs in your ceiling lights, Lutron is one of several companies that make Alexa-compatible switches that you can mount on the wall and replace your existing switches.

All of these options may seem confusing, but it doesn’t matter how you use them (you can even combine multiple systems). Make sure the box says it works with Alexa and is doing business.

How to set up Alexa-controlled lighting

To get started with Smart Lighting, you must first set up Smart Lighting with Alexa through the official app. Here’s what to do:

Install bulbs, plugs or switches according to the instructions. You may need to download an app, create an account, and set up your device. The smart gadget must work on its own before adding it to Alexa.

After setting up your device, launch the Alexa app and Device The tab at the bottom right of the screen.

There is also a lot that can be said for controlling the brightness and changing the color if the light supports it. Here are some common commands:

  • Alexa, dim the bedroom lights.”
  • Alexa, brighten up the bedroom.”
  • Alexa, set the bedroom lights to 50 percent.”

If you install more than one light in a room, you can group them to turn them on or off together with a single command. In fact, the lights don’t even have to be in the same room. You can create groups that control all lights on the same floor or group of rooms.

Alexa gives you the ability to fully automate your lighting. You can turn it on or off at certain times of the day, when another device is activated (eg when unlocking the Smart Lock front door), or when your phone leaves or arrives.
