Cropping a photo (eg cropping it to the desired size) can be done in seconds using simple photo editing tools. If you need to crop out unnecessary footage or change the shape or aspect ratio of a photo, cropping is a quick way to get results.
Here’s how to crop a photo on your PC or Mac using your computer’s built-in photo editor. You will also learn how to crop photos on mobile using a free photo editing app.
It’s easy, quick, and quite fun once you get used to it.
Crop photos to rectangles on PC
If you’re a PC user with Microsoft Windows, you can crop using a built-in program called Microsoft Paint.
You can also resize images in Microsoft Office.
Choose find. seek enter the lower left Paint. Choose open mind below the app.
To edit photos file > open mind.
select a photo and then open mind.

Now when you move the cursor over the photo, you can select the rectangular crop outline and drag it over the photo. When you release the mouse, the cut outline still exists and can be repositioned by clicking on a corner or midpoint (denoted by the white dot).
To start over, just click anywhere on the photo and the crop outline will disappear. When you are happy with the cut outline, select Next. harvest Finish cropping from the top menu.
once you choose harvestCheck out the newly cropped image in the workspace.
Crop photos with free-form selection on PC
As an alternative to rectangular cropping, Paint also provides a free-form cropping selection option. So, if you want to crop the entire background of the photo in the example above, you can use the Freehand Crop tool to slowly outline the flowers.
To use Freeform Crop Selection, do this:
Choose file > open mind.
select a photo and then open mind.
where painting Select the drop-down menu in the section. Choosethe chosen ones free choice.
Press and hold the left mouse button anywhere on the photo where you want to start the freeform selection while tracking around the area you want to keep. When you return to the starting point (or just let go), the cut outline will appear.
The outline looks like a rectangle, but it is cut to the shape you just drew.
Choose harvest.
If you prefer to crop around the area of the photo you want to remove (which can be much easier in some cases) reverse selection When selected from the drop-down menu free choice Draw the cut outline.
To remove the white area around the cropped area of the photo transparent choice When selected from the drop-down menu free choice Draw the cut outline.
Crop Photos to Rectangle on Mac
If you’re a Mac user, you can crop your photos by installing a program called Photos on your computer. To access:
Choose To Walk > Application.
open mind Picture.
go into photos file > income.
Find the photo you want to edit and double-click it.
Choose edit It’s in the upper-right corner of the panel.
Resize the crop region by selecting one of the corner handles.
Once you’re happy with the crop, choose: complete.
Crop Photos into Circles on Mac
Preview allows you to crop your photo into circles, rectangles or free-form shapes. To crop a photo into a circle using the preview:
Navigate to the folder containing the photo you want to crop.
Double-click a photo to open it. preview.
Select from the top left selection tool dropdown and selection oval selection.
if you can’t see them selection tool drop down, select from right Show markup toolbar.
Select the area you want to crop and drag.
Choose harvest Complete the task.
If you are editing a format other than PNG, you may be prompted to edit it. switch painting.
Crop photos on your iOS or Android device
There are many free photo editing apps that you can use to crop photos on your mobile device, but for simplicity, I use Adobe’s Photoshop Express app. It’s free to download and use on iOS, Android, and Windows devices, and you don’t need an Adobe ID to use it.
When you download and open the app, you will be prompted to grant permission to access your photos. After that, the app will display all the latest photos stored on your device.
Open the photo in Photoshop Express.
Tap anywhere on the photo to bring up the editing tools.
Choose harvest.
Drag the cropping handle until you remove the unwanted portions. Alternatively, you can choose from a variety of cropping frames for specific aspect ratios to fit specific social media posts. This includes photos used with Facebook profile covers, Instagram photos, Twitter post photos, and more.
Once done, you can use the other menu options at the bottom and top of the screen to move to the next level and save your harvest. just cut it split > save to gallery To save it to your device, open it or share it in another app, it’s in the upper-right corner of the screen.

As an alternative to rectangular cropping, Paint also has an option for free-form crop selections. So if you wanted to crop out the entire background of the photo in the example above, you could slowly trace around the flower using the free-form crop selection to do it.
To use the free-form crop selection, do the following:

Select your photo, then select Open.
In the Image section, select the dropdown Select, the select Free-form selection.
Press your left mouse button anywhere on the photo where you want to start your free-form selection and hold it as you trace around the area you want to keep. Once you’ve made it back to your starting point (or simply let go), the crop outline will appear.
The outline will look like a rectangle but will crop as the shape you’ve just drawn.
Select Crop.
If you’d rather crop around the area of the photo that you want to get rid of, which can be much easier to do in some instances, you can select Invert selection from the dropdown menu when you select Free-form selection and draw your crop outline.
To get rid of the white space around the cropped area of the photo, select Transparent selection from the dropdown menu when you select Free-form selection and draw your crop outline.
Crop a Photo as a Rectangle on Your Mac
If you’re a Mac user, you’ll have a program called Photos installed on your machine that allows you to do your cropping. To access it, do the following:
Select Go > Applications.
Open Photos.
In Photos, go to File > Import.
Find the photo you want to edit and double-click it.
Select Edit on the top right side of the panel.
Select Crop.

Once you’re satisfied with the crop, select Done.

To crop photos on your mobile device, you can take advantage of countless free photo editing apps out there, but for the sake of keeping things simple, we’ll use Adobe’s Photoshop Express app. It’s free to download and use on iOS, Android and Windows devices, and no — you don’t need to have an Adobe ID to use it.
Once you’ve downloaded the app and opened it, you’ll be asked to give it permission to access your photos. After you do, the app will show you all your most recent photos stored on your device.
Open a photo in Photoshop Express.
Tap anywhere on the photo to see editing tools.
Select Crop.
Drag the crop handles until you trim out the parts you don’t want. Alternatively, you can select from different crop frames for specific aspect ratios that fit certain social media posts. These include ones that fit Facebook profile cover photos, Instagram photos, Twitter post photos and more.
When you’re done, you can save the crop by simply navigating to the next step using the other menu options at the bottom and top of the screen. If cropping is all you needed to do, just tap Share > Save to Gallery in the top right corner of the screen to save it to your device or open/share it within another app.
