Email Threading on iOS Devices

The email application built into Apple iOS has several settings that control email threading. Email threading is enabled by default.

  • organized by topic: This setting controls whether threading is used for email. Deselect this option to completely disable threading. The default is On with a green icon.
  • Reduce read messages: You can collapse a message you have already read.
  • latest message above: This is disabled by default, but seems like a good option to enable. If you don’t see your most recent message at the top of Mail, you may have to scroll through multiple messages to find the most recent one.
  • full thread: This setting groups email messages into threads, even if they come from different mailboxes.

Activate one or both of the options you want to enable.

Email Threading in Gmail on Android Devices

Starting with Android 5.0 Lollipop, Android devices use Gmail as the default email application, unlike the previous Android application called Simple. e-mail. Email threading (called Conversation View) is enabled by default, but if it is not enabled, follow these steps to enable it.

This setting can be controlled for each email account you set up in the Mail app.

Here are some guidelines on how to join email threads, especially if multiple users are involved.

  • Stay on topic. That said, don’t deviate from the original topic.
  • Avoid cluttering recipients’ inboxes by removing unnecessary images (such as company logos or advertisements) from forwarded emails.
  • Copy or forward someone by name in a reply. This can cause a lot of inconvenience and confusion, so please consider it carefully. Of course, if your email thread is private, you know if it’s appropriate to copy someone. However, posting a new person to an existing thread is usually because a new issue affecting that thread has surfaced.
  • Notify existing recipients when adding a new user to a thread. This is a simple courtesy to ensure that all recipients immediately know who is participating in the discussion.
  • Clarify the point you’re discussing, especially if it relates to older emails buried deep in the thread.
