How to Use a GoPro Hero 8 or Hero 9 as a Webcam


The latest version of the GoPro makes it very easy to use as a webcam. All you need is a Mac or Windows device, a smartphone, a USB-C cable and a GoPro. As of this writing, the Windows version of the GoPro Webcam Utility is still in beta, so you may need to restart the webcam app or reconnect the USB cable before it works.

Update your GoPro’s firmware to the latest version. In the GoPro app, select the camera, then tap the three dots in the corner, Firmware update. Follow the necessary steps.

Download and install GoPro’s Webcam Utility. A complete Windows installation requires a computer restart.

Select the GoPro app. In Windows, a small GoPro icon will open in the lower right corner. On a Mac, it’s at the bottom of the taskbar.

Connect your GoPro to your computer using a USB-C cable. The GoPro icon should now have a blue dot.

If possible, use a powered USB outlet. This reduces the load on the battery. If you’re concerned about battery wear, you can also remove the battery while your GoPro is connected to a powered USB port.

Open your Streaming or Video app and go to Settings. You should see GoPro as an option under Camera. Choose it and start the meeting.

In most cases, you should use the app instead of the browser version. As of this writing, the GoPro Webcam Utility only supports the Chrome versions of Zoom, YouTube Live, and WebEx.

How to use your old GoPro as a webcam


If you have a Hero 4, 5, 6 or 7 model, you will need to use the micro HDMI output to connect to a laptop. This requires a micro HDMI to HDMI cable and an HDMI to USB video converter. Find a video that can stream at least 1080p video at 60 frames per second (fps). You must also connect your GoPro to an independent power source.

Turn on your GoPro and select it. setting > input/output > HDMI output. Set HDMI Output to On life.

Connect your GoPro to the converter and connect the converter to your laptop. The adapter should work by default, but you can also use the included software to adjust the settings to your liking.

Select GoPro in the camera options of your webcam software. Instead, you may see which converter you are using. Selecting this will also connect your GoPro.
