How to Use Apple’s Clips App

Create short videos from new or existing videos and photos

  • Video recording: project > new. Take a photo: tap Closure > tap just record add it to the timeline X Abandon.

Apple’s free Clips app is a great tool for creating short videos, slideshows, school projects, and more. Use photos and videos from the Photos app on your iPhone or iPad, or new videos and photos taken directly with Clips. Here’s how Clips works, what’s included, and what’s new in Clips version 3.0:

Clips works on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices and requires iOS 14.0 or later. Some features require iPhone X or later.

What is a clip?

If you have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, download a clip from the App Store and create a shareable movie called a project. Clips are easy to use, even for those with no video editing experience. It’s a great way for kids to be creative or create school projects.

Exporting Clips videos is easy. There is no built-in social media integration, so parents have more control over how videos are shared.

Record a video with the app’s user-friendly interface, then add photos and videos from your library. Add filters and animations to your movies and create automatic subtitles using your voice. Add stickers, memojis, emojis, music and immersive camera effects. Then export the video to send to friends and family, or share it on Instagram or other social sites.

Selfie scenes are one of the most popular features of the app that lets you put yourself in funny scenes and backgrounds.

Clips 3.0 adds several long-awaited features to the app, including the ability to record in different aspect ratios (16:9, 4:3 and square) and record videos in landscape or portrait orientation. New pop-up special effects include arrows, shapes, stickers and royalty-free music.

How to create your first project by recording video as a clip.

Open clip, open new project and rebuild

tab Aspect Ratio Settings Click the icon in the upper-right corner of the screen, then choose one of them. 16:9, 4:3or square.

Tap the Aspect Ratio Settings icon in the upper-right corner of the screen and choose between 16:9, 4:3 and Square.

Toggle the camera select button from selfie to outward depending on what you’re shooting for. Tap and hold the red button. record Press the button to record a video. release record stop.

Press and hold the red record button to record a video.  Release to stop recording.

If you don’t want to hold down the record button, swipe up to lock it, then tap to stop recording.

To view clips recorded for a project game It’s a button in the timeline at the bottom of the screen. Clips are played in the order in which they were recorded.

In the timeline, tap the play button at the bottom of the screen.

Only one project can be open at a time. As you add content to your project, the list of clips on the timeline grows.

How to take pictures for a clip project

You can also take a picture from the Clips app and add it to your project.

long tap Closure Tap the icon (white circle) until the image appears on the screen.

tab X Close or tap and hold the image in the upper left corner. record Adds the selected photo to the timeline.

How to add photos and videos from your library

Continue adding videos and photos to your project using the clip recording feature, or add photos or videos from the Photos app. New videos and photos appear in the timeline after the previous clip.

How to add existing photos and videos from your library.

tab library Icon (looks like two stacked images). Go to your photo and video library.

Tap a photo or video.

long tap record As long as you want your photos or videos to appear in your project. For example, if you press and hold for 3 seconds, the photo will appear in the project for 3 seconds. Press and hold the video for 5 seconds to display the first 5 seconds of the video.

The photo or video is displayed in the timeline. tab X Say goodbye.

How to add a selfie scene to a clip

Selfie scenes are a fun feature that lets you immerse yourself in an animated backdrop or a scene from an iconic movie in a 360-degree environment. That’s how it works.

Utilizing the TrueDepth camera, this feature requires an iPhone X or later, or iPad Pro models from 2018 or later.

Scroll through the scenes until you find the one you want. Tap on it to select it.

Select a scene to create a selfie scene.

Place your iOS device in front of your face.

Swipe down on the Scene Options panel to record button. long tap record Capture a selfie scene and add it to your project timeline.

How to add effects to clips

Clips have a lot of fun effects. Some effects can be added to any photo or video clip in your project, while others are for live video recording. To add an effect to a clip:

win music Click (notes) to add music to your project.

Tap to select a clip in the timeline.

win effect (multicolored stars) in the bottom menu.

win filter Click (three colored circles) to add a filter. Scroll through the available filters, then click a filter to select it.

win text (Uppercase A and Lowercase) to choose from a variety of colorful subtitles for your clip.

Add caption by tapping text

win brand Tap (red square) to add fun stickers. Use your fingers to move and position it where you want it.

Tap the sticker to add a sticker to the clip.

To apply more than one effect to a single clip, split the clip in two. Tap the clip in the timeline, then Division.

win emoticon (Smiley) Adds emoticons to the clip.

Tap Emoji (Smiley) to add an emoji to the clip.

If you change your mind, tap and hold an emoticon, then select it. turn off.

To use the Memoji function when recording a video effect > Memoji. Tap a Memoji to select it, then frame the face in the viewer. long tap record Capture a Memoji video and add it to your project.

Tap the Memoji to record as a funny face.

To add a live track to your recording live title (speech bubble shape), choose a live title style, and then speak while recording to add text captions to your video.

To add a live title to your recording, click Live Title.

To move a clip, press and hold the clip and move it left or right.

To duplicate a clip, click the clip, then duplicate (box with plus sign).

To save or share a video split Click on the icon and choose from options like AirDrop, SMS, Email, YouTube and more, or share to social media sites. Optionally, save the video to the library.
