How to Use the Microsoft Family Safety App

Track your kids and manage their device time

The Microsoft Family Safety app is Microsoft’s answer to Google’s Family Link app. It gives you insight into your child’s phone usage and location, and can even set time limits on app usage and play time.

Previously, Microsoft Family Safety was only available as an app to control your child’s use of the computer in Windows 10. Now also available in preview for Android and iOS. Apple has a similar app called Screen Time.

How to use the Microsoft Family Safety app

There are several prerequisites for using Microsoft Family Safety. You must have a Microsoft family group, Microsoft Launcher and Edge or Internet Explorer must be installed on the child’s phone, and the child must be added as a member of the family group.

To get started, visit the Microsoft Family Safety page. If you are not already signed in with your Microsoft account, you will be prompted to sign in. Then you can choose. Create a family group start

When you first add a child account, you’ll need to configure what organizers can see in Microsoft Family Groups. Choose from your child’s account Permission Management. Enable organizer privileges in all sections.

Your child will receive an email inviting them to join a Microsoft family group. Please open the email and let them choose. Sign up now.

You will also need to install the Microsoft Launcher app on your phone so that your child can track their location when they join a group. Currently, this app is only available for Android. If your child navigates to App Permissions for the Microsoft Launcher app, and at least location Environment.

For other Microsoft Family Safety features to work, make sure you also have Microsoft Edge or Internet Explorer installed on your child’s mobile device.

You must give the Microsoft Safety Family app time to sync with the Microsoft Launcher app before all menus are displayed.

Monitor mobile usage with Microsoft Family Safety

When Microsoft Family Safety is synced, there are many things you can see and control on your child’s mobile device.

However, Microsoft Family Safety requires your child to join a Microsoft Family Safety group and keep the necessary apps installed. So, you should talk to your child before setting everything up so that everyone is on the same page regarding proper mobile device use.
