Kao the Kangaroo Review: Whimsical Adventure, Basic Combat

The new adventure game, Kao the Kangaroo, was developed and published by Tate Multimedia and stirs feelings of nostalgia for classic 3D platformers like Crash Bandicoot or Spyro the Dragon. There are four worlds that Kao can travel to, and each one has several levels to complete by finding Runes. There are secondary collectibles to find, upgrades to unlock, outfits to buy, and coins to collect throughout the game.
At the start of Kao the Kangaroo, the titular character embarks on a journey to find his sister and father after he has a troubling nightmare. When Kao finds his father’s gloves, he dons them and soon meets the evil entity that’s possessing them. With the help of his master, Walt, Kao learns to control and utilize the power of the gloves. There are objects to interact with that can change the environment, and the gloves can also absorb and use elemental powers to solve puzzles.

To progress through the story, Kao needs to collect Runes in each overworld and within the levels. Each world has levels that are locked behind purple barriers, and finding a set number of Runes is required to open the next area. The final level in each world is a boss fight that needs to be won in order to move on to the next section. There are a few different environments to navigate, such as the dense wilds of the Hungry Jungle or the icy cliffs of the Frozen Mountains. Unlocking a new area and starting the first available level will lead to a new special power-up, such as ice or fire gloves in Kao the Kangaroo. Power-ups are required to solve environmental puzzles and find collectibles.

For every section, there’s an overworld, three levels, and a boss level to complete. The last world has two levels instead of three. To complete levels, Kao will need to continue reaching new checkpoints and collecting Runes until reaching the exit. Checkpoints appear frequently, so the risk of losing progress is minimal. Kao has hearts that are depleted when he takes damage, and lives that will be lost when his hearts run out. Similar to The Legend of Zelda, heart pieces can be found or purchased to increase Kao’s maximum health.
Along with heart pieces, Kao can find crystals, scrolls, and the letters K-A-O in every level that isn’t a boss fight. There are hidden paths throughout the game, and some of them can be difficult to find. Finding collectibles may unlock new outfits or headgear that can be used to customize Kao via a wardrobe. The changing areas are inside stores, which also have items available for purchase, and there’s one in every overworld. Coins to use at the store can be collected in any area, and they respawn when Kao leaves and comes back.

As Kao defeats bosses, he interrogates his enemies and enlists the help of his allies to uncover the truth behind his father’s disappearance. To find his family and defeat the Eternal Warrior, Kao needs to solve platforming puzzles and complete combat challenges. Kao also needs to use the power of the Eternal Gloves to interact with objects, like crystals that spawn temporary paths. Each new overworld introduces a handful of new enemies, but the combat encounters are very easy. Even the boss fights are simplistic and quick, offering little to no challenge or increase in difficulty.
Some of the collectibles can be tough to find, and the platforming puzzles are occasionally challenging. However, Kao’s journey is essentially a simple adventure game in which 100% completion is easily achieved in the first playthrough. As a throwback to classic 3D platformers, Kao the Kangaroo does a good job of capturing the spirit of its predecessors, but the actual gameplay has nothing truly challenging or thrilling. Even so, Tate Multimedia has created a laid back and vibrantly colored adventure that’s fun to play through casually.
