Kingdom Hearts’ Switch Port Now Warns You Not To Play It
The cloud-based Kingdom Hearts games released for Nintendo Switch now tell gamers when trying to play them may be a bad idea. While the series’s upcoming sequel, Kingdom Hearts 4, has many gamers excited, the recent ports have been plagued with problems.
Kingdom Hearts, despite its notoriously complex lore, is one of gaming’s most prominent franchises. When series protagonist Sora was announced as the final roster addition for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, for example, fans around the world were thrilled. The inclusion of Sora was something fans had been campaigning for years for. And in the same vein, another development that many were eager to see was the release of Switch ports for the series’ various titles. This too eventually came to fruition, but in this case the celebrations turned out to be somewhat premature; the cloud-based Kingdom Hearts ports have proven almost unplayable due to bugs and connection issues.

There has now been a new update to the games, announced by the Kingdom Hearts Twitter account (via Kotaku), which relates directly to these issues. Unfortunately, however, the 1.03 update does not truly address the problems plaguing Kingdom Hearts on Switch. Instead, the update adds two new features to the collection. The first allows players to view server congestion on the port’s portal page. The second allows players to select whether to prioritize game performance or graphics quality when streaming Kingdom Hearts 3. This means that should a player’s Switch be struggling with certain parts of Kingdom Hearts 3, like the intense post-game battle against the game’s mysterious secret boss Yozora, then they may be able to change the streaming software’s priorities to make gameplay at least a little smoother.
We’ve published Patch 1.0.3 for the Kingdom Hearts series for Nintendo Switch Cloud Version.

The ability to view server congestion relates to the fact that the quality of the ports relies heavily on the stability of the cloud servers, as well as one’s internet connection. Should too many players connect to the same servers at once, then these servers will most likely become stressed, and as a consequence struggle to deliver a quality stream. In the worst cases, a complete overload might even lead to total crashes. The new update gives players a handy heads-up regarding these potential server issues. However, this is far from an actual fix for the underlying problem, and so the overall system still appears to be very much prone to errors. The issues are so bad that it looks extremely unlikely Kingdom Hearts 4 will come to Switch when it is finally released.
Ultimately, this update for Kingdom Hearts on Switch is not a solution to the ports’ biggest issues, and is more of a stop-gap measure at best. While Kingdom Hearts 3‘s new prioritization options seem like a step in the right direction, the fact that they needed to be implemented at all does not say good things about the current state of the game. The concerns about server congestion, likewise, will not improve opinions of the decision to have the Switch ports be cloud-only to begin with. Unless further improvements are in the works, it seems probable that fans of Kingdom Hearts will be looking to explore the strange world of Quadratum on other platforms when the time comes.
