Kirby 64 Fans Encounter Game-Breaking Glitch On Nintendo Switch Online

A game-breaking bug has been reported in the port of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards for the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion. This report comes less than a day after the title’s launch on the Nintendo Switch Online library. Kirby 64 is another Nintendo 64 port that has encountered issues in its Switch re-release.

Reception to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion online service has been divisive since its launch in 2021. The Nintendo Switch Online service, on its own, offers online gaming services such as multiplayer, cloud saves, and voice chat via a companion phone app, while the Expansion tier adds exclusive access to several classic games including Nintendo 64 ports. Though Nintendo has provided consistent updates to the quantity of content and has also endeavored to fix lingering issues, fans have been critical about the price of the Expansion tier and the overall quality of the Nintendo 64 game ports.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

A recent publication by Nintendo Everything reported that Reddit user keyblademasternadroj encountered a critical bug unique to the Kirby 64: Crystal Shards Switch port. The video shows the game in progress against the underwater boss Acro. The Reddit user suffers a hit against the boss and is immediately rendered helpless. The Reddit user claims that receiving damage from certain sources while underwater can permanently stun-lock Kirby, preventing further inputs. The only option a player has at that point is to exit the level completely.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time a Nintendo 64 game released on Nintendo Switch Online with issues not present in the original releases. Mario Kart 64 is still incapable of saving ghost data, Ocarina of Time has had several graphical hiccups due to draw distance and texture issues, and several other games have had severe dips in frame rate and performance. There have also been several accounts of the original button layouts being too awkward for the Switch controller, and in many of these cases there are no remapping options to fix it. Many have claimed these issues are due to the Switch ports running as emulators rather than actual ports optimized for the Switch’s hardware.

The performance of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and several ongoing issues with previous Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion titles, should be a sign Nintendo needs to re-evaluate how it handles these ports in the future. The consistent re-release of these titles in such poor quality could make it very difficult for fans to shell out the money for the Expansion tier of Nintendo Switch Online. It’s a tragedy that Nintendo insists on shutting down Nintendo related fan projects rather than working with them, as their demonstrated knowledge of applying older software seamlessly to today’s newer hardware could prove invaluable in these matters. Hopefully, Nintendo can correct these issues sooner rather than later.
