Latest Moto G phones promise 5G on a budget

Moto G Stylus 5G 2022

Motorola continues to expand its range of budget Moto smartphones with its latest additions, including more 5G-enabled handsets. One of the Moto G Stylus 5Gs for 2022 was added to last year’s stylus-equipped 5G phones, and the other (referred to simply as Moto G 5G) offers a 5G alternative that fits your budget.

Everything is consistent with Motorola’s clear philosophy for the Moto G series. If this call does not reach you directly, we. And with new entrants offering 5G connectivity for under $500, budget-conscious buyers won’t complain.

Here’s what you need to know about the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) and Moto G 5G. That’s before the two 5G phones hit stores in the next few weeks.

Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) and Moto G 5G Pricing and Availability

The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) will launch first and hit stores on April 28, but you can pre-order the phone from today (April 21). The new version costs $499, a $100 premium over the Moto G Stylus 5G version released last year. (We’ll see how the phone of the year is different in a moment.)

The Moto G Stylus 5G can be ordered through Motorola.com and retail sites such as Best Buy, Walmart and Walmart. Motorola also said that carriers including Cricket Wireless, Dish, Boost Mobile, Republic Wireless, Verizon, AT&T, US Cellular Xfinity Mobile, Spectrum Mobile, Google Fi and Optimum Mobile will offer the new Moto G Stylus 5G in the next few months. I did.

The inclusion of Verizon on this carrier list is noteworthy because the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) will work with that carrier’s mmWave-based 5G tower, but for that compatibility you will need to purchase the phone directly from Verizon. Unlocked Moto G Stylus 5G supports Sub-6GHz and C-Band.

The Moto G 5G inherits the $399 price tag occupied by last year’s version of the Moto G Stylus 5G. Available May 19th at Best Buy, Walmart, Amazon.com and Motorola.com. In the future, Cricket Wireless, Dish, Boost Mobile, Republic Wireless, AT&T, Xfinity Mobile, Spectrum Mobile, US Cellular, Consumer Cellular, Google Fi and Optimum Mobile are the carriers that will deliver Moto G 5G.

As you might have guessed from this list, the Moto G 5G will only work on sub-6GHz 5G based networks, but like the Moto G Stylus 5G, this phone will also be able to take advantage of the new C-band 5G spectrum.

Moto G Stylus 5G (2022): What you need to know

The first thing I thought when I heard about the new Moto G Stylus was, “Didn’t Motorola just release one of these?” You definitely know your mid-range phone. In fact, the Moto G stylus (2022) came out earlier this year, but it was an LTE-only model. This is the 5G version.

More importantly, the latest Moto G Stylus 5G runs on the Snapdragon 695 5G chipset. Not only is it more powerful than the Snapdragon 480 5G from the last Moto G Stylus 5G, but it’s also far superior to this year’s Helio G88 with the LTE version of the stylus. That was our biggest complaint with the phone. Performance was very slow. Hopefully the Moto G Stylus 5G will be better equipped to handle whatever app you throw at it.

The screen is even more impressive. Like last year’s phones, you get a 6.8-inch panel with FHD+ resolution, but this time Motorola has raised the refresh rate to 120Hz for smoother scrolling and a more immersive experience. The 5,000mAh battery provides the multi-day battery life you’d expect from a Moto G phone, despite the power demands of the fast-refresh display.

The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) comes with a 50-megapixel main lens and three cameras highlighted by optical image stabilization. Motorola believes this feature will reduce shaky shots. The 8-megapixel ultra-wide camera offers an 118-degree field of view, allowing you to capture 4x more background detail than a standard lens. Also used as a macro lens with a dedicated depth sensor to round the rear camera.

The 16-megapixel selfie camera on the front is said to have quadrupled the low-light sensitivity. This will give you a better self-portrait when the lighting is dim.

The highlight of the Moto G Stylus 5G is the phone’s built-in stylus, which still sits in a slot on the phone frame. According to Motorola, 95% of Moto G Stylus owners regularly use a built-in input device to take notes, sketch, and edit photos.

A new feature on the phone this year is the creation of live messages that can be sent to recipients via SMS. Sketches created with live messages are animated line by line when sent through popular messaging apps. It’s not the most productive feature, but it adds a nice personal touch to the Moto G Stylus 5G’s trick bag.

One thing Motorola would like to add to this phone is longer software support. The only software update available for the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) is the Android 13 update that Google will release later this year. (The same upgrade policy for the Moto G 5G.) Motorola continues to assert that a single software update is sufficient for customers looking for this kind of mid-range phone, but in our opinion it limits the value of other powerfully promising products. cheap handset.

Moto G 5G: What you need to know

At $399, the Moto G 5G offers less impressive specs than the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022). The attraction here is a phone with 5G connectivity that doesn’t cost a lot of money.

Motorola relies on the MediaTek Dimensity 700 system-on-a-chip to power the Moto G 5G. Given our track record of testing other MediaTek-powered Moto G phones over the past six months, from the Moto G Pure to the Moto G Power, this makes us a little nervous. All of these phones showed noticeable lag in our tests. Especially when starting an app like the camera app. We hope, but cannot be sure, that Moto G 5G will overcome this trend. When reviewing this phone last year, we got mixed results with a Realme 8 5G powered by Dimensity 700.

The refresh rate of the Moto G 5G 6.5-inch panel does not match the 120Hz speed of the Moto G Stylus 5G. But at 90Hz, it’s still faster than you’d expect from a fixed budget device, mostly with a fixed 60Hz refresh rate. The Moto G 5G shares the same 5,000mAh battery as the Moto G Stylus 5G, so battery life is not an issue.

The Moto G 5G doesn’t have the ultra-wide camera of the Moto G Stylus 5G, but instead has a macro and depth sensor along with a 50-megapixel main camera. This camera also does not have optical image stabilization.

Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) and Moto G 5G Preview

From what we’ve looked at both phones so far, the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) looks like an upgraded version of last year’s phone. A chance to test the phone. Speaking of value, the Moto G 5G seems to be the most appealing to cheap hunters who want a 5G-capable device but don’t want to pay a high price. As with the new Moto G stylus, getting your hands on the latest in the growing Moto G family will tell you how the Moto G 5G will perform at this price point.

A new capability in this year’s phone creates Live Messages that you can text to recipients. Any sketch you make with Live Messages will appear as a line-by-line animation when you send it via popular messaging apps. It’s not the most productivity-boosting feature, but it does add a nice personal touch to the Moto G Stylus 5G’s bag of tricks
One thing we wish Motorola would add to these phones is lengthier software support. The Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) is on tap to get just one software update, which would be the Android 13 update Google is introducing later this year. (That’s the same upgrade policy for the Moto G 5G, too.) Motorola continues to insist that a single software update is sufficient for customers looking for these kind of budget phones, but in our viewpoint, it severely limits the value of what otherwise is a promising low-cost handset.
Moto G 5G: What you need to know
At $399, the Moto G 5G boasts less impressive specs than the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022). The appeal here is a phone with 5G connectivity that won’t break the bank.

Motorola turns to a MediaTek Dimensity 700 system-on-chip to power the Moto G 5G. From what we’ve seen so far of both phones, the Moto G Stylus 5G (2022) looks like a beefed-up version of last year’s phone — whether it’s worth the $100 premium over the 2021 remains to be seen once we’ve had a chance to test the phone. Speaking of value, the Moto G 5G seems to appeal most to bargain hunters who want a 5G-ready device but don’t want to pay dearly for it. As with the new Moto G Stylus, we’ll see what kind of performance the Moto G 5G delivers at that price once we get our hands on the latest addition to the growing Moto G family.
