Marvel & DC’s Doomed Crossover Turned Superman into a Huge Jerk
Editor Jim Shooter rejected the time travel plot – but no one told artist George Peréz, who had already started work. The Superman debacle was apparently one of multiple issues that Shooter had with the plot. Not helping matters was the fact that DC writers and artists at the time would usually receive oral permission to work on stories, whereas Marvel creatives needed all their plans approved in writing. Negotiations eventually broke down and the book was cancelled in 1984.
A new storyline would become the basis of Marvel vs. DC in 1996, and the JLA/Avengers would finally be published in 2004, albeit with a different plot than originally intended. The two companies have plenty of internal differences that fans didn’t see, and that made working together quite difficult. The almost-incident involving Superman ignoring all other planets in favor of his own was just one element that led to the collapse of the Justice League and the Avengers teaming up – at least until the 90s.
