Marvel’s Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada to Leave Role After 20 Years

Venerated Marvel Comics figure Joe Quesada is stepping down from his post as the company’s creative director after playing a major role at the comics publisher for nearly a quarter century. In a stunning announcement on Twitter, Quesada informed fans that after a career of more than 20 years, he was leaving Marvel to pursue other opportunities.

Quesada began his career in comics as an artist for publishers such as DC and Valiant. His tenure with Marvel stretches back to the 1998 when he was contracted to run the Marvel Knights imprint, a line of books featuring titles such as Daredevil and Black Panther. The line was a smash success and after two years of heading up Marvel Knights, Quesada was promoted to Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief position after Bob Harras left in 2000. In his time as Editor-in-Chief, Quesada was responsible for the addition of two other popular imprints; the mature-focused MAX line and the popular Ultimate Marvel line. After nearly a decade, Quesada was promoted again to the company’s Chief Creative Officer, and later creative director of Marvel Entertainment.

With such an illustrious career shaping the Marvel Universe for nearly a fifth of a century, Joe Quesada’s recent announcement is all the more surprising. Quesada posted the message “And now for something completely different…” on Twitter with a long-form letter attached. The letter discusses the former Editor-in-Chief’s humble beginnings and the adventure he’s been on in the past two decades. While Quesada doesn’t go into too much detail about why he’s leaving, he does say that he has “an exciting new chapter that’s about to begin,” adding that he will be writing and directing a short indie film. Quesada’s future aspects aside, he takes the time to thank the fans for the love and support he’s received over his time with Marvel and promises that whatever he has on the horizon, “it’s going to be AMAZING!

Despite the shock from Quesada’s blindsiding announcement, he received a lot of love and support from fans and fellow industry figures. Writers like Gail Simone and Charles Soule expressed their happiness for Quesada’s decision, as did other creatives such as Jim Rugg and Jamal Igle. Quesada’s letter continues to rack up likes into the thousands, as well as other responses thanking him for his long career helping make a space for some truly creative stories.

It’s quite a shock seeing someone who has helped direct one of the Big Two for so long venture out to parts unknown. There’s no doubt that Quesada has helped leave a mark on Marvel Entertainment and arguably on the entire comic book industry with his dedication and love of the medium. Many fans may speculate on what exactly is driving the decision, but from the sound of his letter, Quesada seems excited for what the next chapter of his life holds. It’s unknown right now what exactly is next for Joe Quesada, but the outpouring of support he’s received in response to his departure shows he’s made an impact on Marvel Comics that won’t soon be forgotten.
