It was recently revealed that Marvel’s Spider-Man could have appeared on Xbox systems, but Microsoft turned down the offer, leaving Sony to greenlight the project. Once Sony was on-board, then Marvel’s Spider-Man became a PlayStation 4 exclusive, though it would later receive a dedicated PS5 port. In 2017, the official Insomniac Games Twitter responded to a post asking about ports of Marvel’s Spider-Man, with “it will never appear on Xbox or PC. It’s a permanent PS4 exclusive publisher by Sony Interactive Entertainment“. Marvel’s Spider-Man might not be appearing on Xbox Series X/S, but the PC version of the game means that Insomniac Games is going back on its previous statement.

The date of the Twitter post is a huge indication as to why the company changed its mind. In 2019, Sony acquired Insomniac Games for a reported $229, which seems like a small sum in retrospect compared to the amount spent on studio acquisitions in recent years. It’s now wholly Sony’s call whether the titles produced by Insomniac Games are ported to other systems, as they now own the studio. Insomniac Games is hardly the first company to walk back a promise of console exclusivity, as the countless Resident Evil 4 ports prove, and the fact that Marvel’s Spider-Man was a PlayStation console exclusive for four years meant that Sony fans had sole access to the game for a long time.
