Microsoft’s OneDrive: Can It Store And Stream Digital Music?

OneDrive is a cloud storage service, but can you play your music library?

Microsoft’s OneDrive (formerly sky drive) is an online storage service that allows you to store photos, documents, and other media, as well as create and edit certain types of Microsoft Office files.

What is One Drive?

OneDrive is part of a suite of cloud-based services provided by Microsoft. These services can be accessed using a single Microsoft username and password. But what about digital music? Can I use OneDrive to store and stream my song library?

The following are frequently asked questions about the service’s capabilities as a music sharing platform.

Can I upload and stream my music library to OneDrive?

Yes, but it is not a one-step process. OneDrive can store almost any file you want, and your music files are no exception. However, you cannot stream music directly from OneDrive. When you click on one of the uploaded songs, you have the only option to download it.

To stream audio from OneDrive, you must use Microsoft’s Xbox Music service. The two services are linked and Xbox Music is basically a subscription service (Xbox Music Pass), but you can use it for free to stream your uploaded music.

Another caveat: You cannot upload music to the old folder on OneDrive. it must be on music folder. If you don’t use this destination, Xbox Music won’t be able to recognize the file as streamable media.

Files can be uploaded through a browser or the OneDrive app.

What audio formats are supported?

You can currently upload encoded songs in the following audio formats:

  • MP3
  • AAC (M4A)
  • WMA

As expected, files with DRM copy protection such as M4P or WMA Protected cannot be played. Microsoft also states that some lossless AAC files may not play properly.

How many songs can I upload to OneDrive?

The current upload limit is 50,000. The problem with OneDrive is that uploads count towards your storage limit. Google does not have this limit on the number of gigabytes provided. This means that if you have only 15GB of standard storage, you will run out of storage before reaching the 50,000 files limit.

If you’re already an Xbox Music Pass subscriber, you’ll get 100 GB of extra storage.

To increase OneDrive storage for free, Microsoft is currently rewarding users for installing the OneDrive app and turning on the camera backup feature. If you’ve never installed this app, it’s a great way to free up more storage space for your music files.
