MJF & Tony Khan Set To Have Sit-Down Meeting About Contract

On the surface, it looks like this all could be an elaborate work, but multiple sources have refuted that idea. That could change after this sitdown, as MJF appears to be attempting to blur the lines between reality and wrestling, much like Brian Pillman did prior to WWE’s Attitude Era. Word surfaced recently that MJF had already renegotiated his contract once, but has grown to feel that he’s outperforming that deal too. Khan, for his part, has told others inside AEW that he’d be willing to pay Friedman top-star money but would want to add time to the contract. It became known over the last several days that MJF’s deal will expire on January 1, 2024.

There were always going to be trials like this as AEW grew, and it will be quite telling to see how Khan and MJF handle these negotiations. Friedman is just 26 and has decades left in the pro wrestling game if he so chooses, so this probably won’t be the first time he needs to push for more money based on what he feels he is worth. Khan also deserves credit, at least based on what is known, for being willing to renegotiate with talent who are outpacing their initial contracts. AEW will continue to develop new stars, and it’s important that they maintain a reputation for being flexible and willing to work with wrestlers. For what it’s worth, word is that the AEW lockerroom has taken notice of how WWE has treated Cody Rhodes and are more open to making that jump than they have been in the past.
