Activision Blizzard and Infinity Ward recently shared the title and logo for Call of Duty 2022 – Modern Warfare II – and it’s, of course, been met with a ton of trolling online. Infinity Ward confirmed the Modern Warfare sequel earlier this year following months of rumor and speculation about where Call of Duty would head next. Given the astronomical success of 2019’s Modern Warfare, it should come as no surprise that the series will once more return to modernity.
The Modern Warfare-branded Call of Duty installment in 2019 proved plenty confusing enough, especially since the original title received a remastered release just a few years prior. At the very least, the 2019 adventure had the luxury of differentiating itself from the past due to the 2009 game’s main title of Call of Duty 4. There exists no such technicality for the upcoming release to fall back on, though it seems Activision Blizzard plans on leaning hard into the Roman numeral spelling of the number two this time around.
Activision and Infinity Ward rolled out an official Modern Warfare II title and logo reveal yesterday, April 28, shortly after the publisher’s board of directors approved the pending acquisition by Microsoft. The logo features a bold white ‘M’ and ‘W,’ with each letter’s innermost lines highlighted green to emphasize the Roman numeral for two. Naturally, fans online are having a laugh at the confirmed title. Twitter user xFleXy_ noted that COD players in 2009 spent the year playing a WWII game (World at War) while waiting for Modern Warfare 2. Similarly, Vanguard players patiently await the release of another Modern Warfare 2 later this year. In response to Infinity Ward’s announcement post, YouTuber CouRageJD joked that since he loved MW2 he’s really looking forward to MW2. Another popular YouTuber, MrTLexify, mocked the title in a tweet about his love of all the Modern Warfare games.

The naming conventions for Call of Duty games have received quite a bit of ridicule in recent years. Black Ops 4 and Black Ops Cold War arguably count among the biggest targets but it looks as though 2022’s Modern Warfare II installment will take the cake. Mocking aside, much of the Call of Duty community seems genuinely excited for the new release given the shortcomings of Vanguard.
Outside of the name and logo, Activision hasn’t shared much in the way of concrete details about the new Call of Duty entry. However, fans can expect the sequel to run on a brand-new game engine. And, according to the publisher’s recent financial report, the latest from Infinity Ward may very well count as the most advanced installment in the long-running series to date.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is expected to launch in late 2022.
