Moon Knight ending explained: your biggest Marvel questions answered
Let’s talk about the ending of Moon Knight. Sure, Mark Spector and Steven Grant’s story seemed to have reached a neat conclusion, but the post-credits scene broke the gruesome door and ridiculed Oscar Isaac’s long future for the character.
But before that extra scene, there was still a lot to see. The hippopotamus god Taweret, Ethan Hawkes Arthur Harrow, Ammit, and Khonshu all got their roles in the Moon Knight finale.
So what exactly does the end of Moon Knight mean? And will we ever see Mark again in Moon Knight season 2? What sequence was a dream and what a reality? Below we break down all the twists and turns of the finale to explain exactly what happened and answer your hot questions.
Moon Night Ending Description
Moon Knight’s finale was full of action and took time to introduce two new characters.
Big trouble arises when Arthur Harrow finally frees the Egyptian god Ammit from her captivity. Mark Spector and Stephen Grant are still trapped in the afterlife, but Leyla El Pauli is keeping an eye on Harrow from the ground. Taweret tells her to free her Khonshu and informs her that Marc and Steven are about to return.
Meanwhile, Mark sets out to rescue Stephen from the sands of Duat (the Egyptian afterlife). He makes heartfelt speeches to his alternate personality, but that doesn’t seem to be enough. Thanks to the Egyptian god Osiris, Mark himself is eventually trapped in the sand until the door is reopened to the world of the living. Then Taweret helps the duo come back to life.
To stop Ammit, Layla agreed to become Taweret’s avatar… but it’s only temporary. Layla puts on her winged costume and becomes a full-fledged superhero. She also frees Khonshu.
The only way to stop Ammit is to lock her in a human body and leave her vulnerable, so Marc and Layla pursue Harrow while Khonshu fights the crocodile god. During the fight, Mark is stunned, Harrow nearly killed, and Steven confirms he wasn’t behind the attack.
Layla and Marc complete the ritual to capture Ammit, and Marc tricks Khonshu into releasing him. Then, oddly enough, both Mark and Steven go back to Putnam Asylum. However, this time he sees Harrow leaving bloody footprints and refuses to accept his diagnosis. Then they wake up in their London apartment.
In Moon Knight’s post-credit scenes, we can see that Harrow was transported to the Sienkiewicz Asylum after the plot in the finale. He meets Khonshu again in the back of the car and God reveals that he still has a human avatar…Jake Lockley. Then Lockley shot Harrow and would have killed Ammit as well.
Who is Jake Lockley?
In Marvel Comics, Jake Lockley is another character of Mark Spector. He drives a taxi and connects with the criminal underworld through his informants. It was hinted at at the beginning of the series. At one point, Marc and Steven passed out with no memory of killing some mercenaries. Later, it was suggested that Jake was imprisoned in a sarcophagus in a psychiatric hospital, and in another scene, during a conversation with Dr. Harrow, he appears to be in control. We finally arrive in the finals.
Is this Jake Lockley Khonshu’s new avatar?

In the post-credits scene, Harrow is transported from Sienkiewicz Psychiatric Hospital to a car loaded with Khonshu. But this time, Mark is not with him. That’s Jake Lockley. He said, “He doesn’t know how much he cares, so why does he need someone else?” Ask Khonshu before introducing Harrow to Jake.
So Marc and Steven completed the Khonshu work, but the physical form was not.
Was this post credit sequence real? Or was it just a dream?
Moon Knight’s biggest twist sees Marc waking up at Putnam Psychiatric Hospital and questioning the reality of the entire series. But it turns out to be part of the Egyptian afterlife, which means that Mark never really imagined the full TV show until now.
However, in the post-credits scene, Harrow is in a psychiatric hospital. Is this a dream? It doesn’t seem like it. In fact, everything is very realistic, and the hospital is called Sienkiewicz Psychiatric Hospital after cartoonist Bill Sienkiewicz. Harrow shows no signs of hallucinations and sees Khonshu again before meeting an untimely end at the hands of Jake Lockley.
How does Layla get superpowers?
Layla becomes a full-fledged superhero in the finale, all thanks to Taweret. Her god stretches out her hand and tells Layla that Marc and Steven are about to return from her afterlife, but Layla is reluctant to become her own avatar in her fight against Ammit. She finally agrees, but it’s only temporary. This gives her a fancy winged costume for the god hippo.
According to Marvel.com, Layla’s official superhero name is Scarlet Scarab.
How does Steven Grant escape the sand?
In Episode 5 of Moon Knight, Steven is thrown into a ship in a battle against Duat’s unbalanced soul. He was insisted on by the sand and seemed to be frozen forever. However, in the finale, Mark rejects the reed paradise and returns to his alternate personality.
In a moving speech, Mark tells Stephen: I survived because I knew I was not alone.” As Marc freezes in the sand and the two personalities melt, the door to the living world opens and they escape together from the Duat with a little help from Taweret.
Why did Mark and Steven return to psychiatry?
After imprisoning Ammit in Harrow’s body and relinquishing her powers, Marc and Steven wake up again in Putnam. It’s a confusing moment, but as Harrow walks, he leaves bloodstains in the trail that both Marc and Steven noticed. Refusing to accept Harrow’s diagnosis and consequently his version of reality, they both fall back and wake up in their London apartment. They seem to have finally reconciled with each other and with everything that has happened to them. And the final vision was to take care of everything that happened to them.
What Happened to Mark Spector/Stephen Grant?
After stopping Harrow and Ammit, Marc and Steven wake up in their London home. Both are free from the influence of Khonshu, but as they try to stand up, old ankle shackles grab them and drop their faces down to the floor. It’s not a very lavish ending to the series…but it’s a peaceful ending for both.
What about Arthur Harrow and Ammit?
Throughout the series, Harrow tried to bring Ammit back to life and helped her to exercise judgment on humanity. In Episode 6 he finally achieves his goal and Ammit returns. She immediately eats her soul and starts fighting Konshu, and Marc and Layla try to reach Harrow.
Then Mark is stunned and Jake Lockley is the one who took down Harrow. Layla and Marc lock Ammit inside him, but Marc refuses to kill him even though Khonshu urges him to finish the job.
However, the moon god finds a way to solve the problem and tricks Jake Lockley into killing Harrow instead. Since Harrow was shot, it can be assumed that Ammit is also gone forever.

Moon Knight ending explained
The Moon Knight finale was packed with action – and even found time to introduce two new characters.
A major problem arises when Arthur Harrow finally succeeds in freeing the Egyptian god Ammit from her imprisonment. Marc Spector and Steven Grant are still stuck in the afterlife, but Layla El-Faouly is on the scene, and keeps track of Harrow. Taweret tells her to free Khonshu, and lets her know that Marc and Steven are trying to return.
Marc, meanwhile, goes to free Steven from the sands of the Duat (that’s the Egyptian afterlife). He gives his alternate personality a heartfelt speech, but it doesn’t seem to be enough – Marc himself ends up trapped in the sand, until the gates back to the world of the living open thanks to the Egyptian god Osiris. Taweret then helps the duo return to life.
To stop Ammit, Layla agrees to become Taweret’s avatar… but only temporarily. Layla becomes a fully-fledged superhero, complete with her owned winged costume. She also frees Khonshu.
The only way to stop Ammit is by imprisoning her in a human body, therefore making her vulnerable, so Marc and Layla go after Harrow, while Khonshu battles the crocodile god. In the fight, Marc blacks out, and when he comes to, Harrow is near-dead. Steven confirms he wasn’t the one behind the attack.
Layla and Marc complete the ritual to trap Ammit, and Marc gets Khonshu to release him, meaning he loses his powers as Moon Knight. Then, strangely enough, Marc and Steven both end up in the Putnam Psychiatric Hospital again. But, this time, they notice Harrow is treading bloody footprints, and refuse to accept his diagnosis. They then wake up in their flat in London.
In the Moon Knight post-credits scene, it’s revealed that Harrow was taken to Sienkiewicz Psychiatric Hospital in the wake of the finale’s action. He meets Khonshu again in the back of a car, and the god reveals that he still has a human avatar… Jake Lockley. Lockley then shoots Harrow dead, presumably also killing Ammit.

In the post-credits scene, Harrow is taken from Sienkiewicz Psychiatric Hospital to a car that contains Khonshu. But, this time, Marc isn’t with him – it’s Jake Lockley. “Why would I ever need anybody else when he has no idea how troubled he truly is?” Khonshu asks, before introducing Harrow to Jake.
So, while Marc and Steven are done with Khonshu, he’s not quite done with their physical form.

In Moon Knight episode 5, Steven went overboard in the Duat during a fight with the unbalanced souls. He was claimed by the sands and seemed frozen forever. But, in the finale, Marc rejects the paradise of the Field of Reeds and goes back for his other personality.
In a touching speech, Marc tells Steven: “From the moment you arrived, way back then… You saved me.
