Sony has officially stopped production of the PS Vita, but this little powerhouse will remain in our memories and damp hands for years to come. Uncharted: It has proven to be a worthy destination for blockbuster games like Golden Abyss and Tearaway, and has provided a place to shine for great indie games like Hotline Miami and Severed. We talked to the developers about the PS Vita and realized we weren’t the only ones mourning the loss.

Do you have any PS Vita memories you would like to share? Any ideas on what Sony might do next in the handheld market? Would you like to record and send a poem about Tearaway? please let me know Twitter.

Graham Smith, Drinkbox Studios

Games: Tales From Space: Mutant Blobs Attack, Guacamelee!, Severed
“The Vita was the first handheld console that Drinkbox Studios developed a game for. Setting up and running on the Vita was very smooth as it was similar to PS3 development, and the performance of the device was good enough to run the game without sacrificing quality. We’ve had a lot of success with the Vita, releasing three games to consoles, including a launch title made specifically for the Vita (Mutant Blob Attack). We also made Guacamelli playable! I use my Vita as a controller on my PS3 and display a mini map while playing on the Vita screen. Overall, it was an absolute pleasure to work with Vita.”

Toshihiro Kondo, Nippon Falcon

Games: Legends of Heroes: Trail of Cold Steel, Ys series
“Falcom has released many titles for the Vita, starting with the Trails and Ys series. We learned a lot about development, which not only me but the entire development team has a very strong bond with Vita. I myself have played many titles as a player. There aren’t many portable gaming hardware devices with so many quality titles so readily available! I’m proud to say I still have my resume. I look forward to seeing him resurrect in the future.”

Niikawa Sohei Nippon Ichi Software

Game: Disgaea series
“Personally, the Vita is my absolute favorite console. Nippon Ichi Software developed and sold a lot of software for this console. Vita is great! If there’s a sequel to Vita, I’d like to get the game ready for release!”

Mizokami Yu, Nippon Ichi Software

Game: Yomawari: Night Alone
“The first game I made was for Vita hardware, so I was very attached to it. In fact, I never developed anything other than a Vita! The Vita was a playful console that offered a lot of unique features like the rear touchscreen. I love the Vita.”

Josh Fairhurst, Limited Run Games

Games: Cronus Ark, King of Fighters 97 Global Match, Saturday Morning RPG

“For me, it’s the perfect platform for visual novels, shooters, and RPGs. It’s easier to develop compared to the 3DS (and more powerful), and the beautiful widescreen display allows these genres to shine on the platform. If they were mainstream in the West, the Vita I think it would have been a lot more successful.”

Takuya Yamanaka and Akria

Game: Caligula Effect
“In retrospect, the PSVita was the longest console I’ve played. (Games like Sakatsuku (Let’s Make a Pro-Soccer Club!), Persona 4 Golden, Freedom Wars really blew my mind~) Multiple handheld consoles But at first he said, “I’m walking together. The PlayStation in my hand is something I will never forget. My debut as a producer, Caligula, was on the Vita, so we’re very committed to the console.”

Toshihiro Kondo, Nihon Falcom

Games: The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel, Ys Series“At Falcom, starting with the Trails and Ys series, we have truly released many titles for the Vita. We’ve learned so much about it by developing for it and, not only I, but our entire development staff has a very strong attachment to the Vita. I’ve also played many titles on it as a gamer myself. There aren’t many handheld gaming hardware devices out there with so many high quality titles so easily available! I’m proud to say that I still have my Vita to this day. I would certainly love to see it revived in the future.”
Sohei Niikawa, Nippon Ichi Software

Games: Disgaea series“The Vita is personally my all-time favorite console. At Nippon Ichi Software, we’ve developed and sold lots of software on this console. Vita’s awesome! If there will ever be a successor to the Vita, I would love have a game ready for its launch!”

Games: Yomawari: Night Alone“The first game I ever developed was for the Vita hardware, so I have a lot of attachment to it. In fact, I’ve never developed for anything but Vita! The Vita was such a playful console that provided so many unique features like the back-touch screen. Vita’s so awesome.”

Games: Chronus Arc, King of Fighters 97 Global Match, Saturday Morning RPG
“For me, it’s the perfect platform for visual novels, shoot-‘em-ups and RPGs. It’s easy to develop for versus the 3DS (and more powerful) and the beautiful widescreen display makes these genres really shine on the platform. I feel like if those genres were more mainstream in the West, the Vita would be much more successful here.”
Takuya Yamanaka, Aquria

Games: The Caligula Effect“Thinking back, the PSVita was the console that I played for the longest time. (Games like Sakatsuku (Let’s Make a Pro-Soccer Club!), Persona 4 Golden, and Freedom Wars really stole my time~) There have been several portable game consoles, but that initial, rich feeling ‘I am walking around with a PlayStation in my hands’ is something that I will never forget. As a creator, my debut work Caligula was on the Vita so we are very much in debt to the console.”
