My Evil Dead: The Game hands-on was full of farts and frantic fun
I just defeated the Evil Dead: Game development team by choking my Kandarian demon chest and dusting it with poisonous farts. “You beat them faster than anyone,” admits Saber Interactive’s director of PR. “Yeah, it was fast,” said Tim Willits, Chief Creative Officer at Saber Interactive. The rest of Evil Dead: Hands-on Game is as wild and chaotic as you’d expect from a game set in a legendary horror world filled with skeleton flutists, chainsaw executions and Bruce Campbell one-liners.
Evil Dead: Game is an asymmetric multiplayer experience similar to Dead by Daylight. Four survivors fight the demon and the survivors work together to fight the dead (think demon zombies) and banish the evil from their plane of existence. Of course, they are deeply immersed in Evil Dead knowledge as the team has worked extensively with Evil Dead veterinarians and creators to keep facts in the original material. The team at Saber Interactive wants to attract fans of the Evil Dead franchise, asymmetrical veterans and newcomers alike, and with Evil Dead: Game’s unique arsenal, it’s sure to attract fans that are likely to do so.

Narrative Director Craig Sherman proudly says: It is difficult to argue with them there. Evil Dead: Game has an affectionate attention to detail that demonstrates the team’s reverence for the franchise. It’s like an almost exact replica of the original movie cabin you can get around, or a car that drives like Ash Williams. From pale yellow paint jobs like the 1973 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale to Tennessee license plates.
The survivors to choose from are real characters from the universe, most of which are voiced by the original actors. Professor Raymond Knowby, who was the first to summon the Kandarian demon, is the game’s narrator. As you play as a Kandarian demon, switch to camera angles and movement styles that emulate the legendary shake cam setup invented by Sam Raimi for the original Evil Dead movie.
We are big fans of Evil Dead and this has always been a dream project for us.
Tim Willitz, Saber Interactive
Of course, it is Bruce Campbell, an integral part of game development, where the entire Evil Dead franchise revolves. “he ton It shows and the commitment to working with us on the details of this game,” said Willits. Not only will there be a different version of Ash Williams in each class, but Campbell was also involved in character design. “He grabbed his ass. .” continues Willitz, “he was worried that one of Ash Williams’ models had his hips incorrect! It was fun going back to our designers.”
Of course, you can expect Evil Dead’s signature wild humor to flow throughout the game. “The game is rough and brutal. So It’s gone too far, and we certainly haven’t curbed that factor.” After I asked if I really let the developers down by choking my chest, Newman said, “You’re right… from Henrietta Novi’s chest to the big devil grandma’s. Hug.” It’s hot.
It’s not my mom’s asymmetric horror game.
While playing Evil Dead: The Game, you want to jump into your car, but be careful. The devil can own a car. (Image credit: Boss Team Games)
My Dead by Daylight comparison was off target just minutes after launching Evil Dead: Game, which I experienced firsthand. Dead by Daylight has survivors with few tools to fight the killer, while Evil Dead: Game arm you with teeth. Regarding other asymmetric horror games, Willits said, “Half of the core game is where the good guys fight the bad guys. It’s about being more passive and getting the upper hand through coordination and ruthless battles rather than just trying to survive.” . In Evil Dead, players will be given one melee weapon and one ranged weapon, and a huge variety of options on a huge map. The transition between hitting Deadite with an ax and aiming it is seamless to maximize carnage.
At the beginning of each game there’s a short loot phase that’s much more reminiscent of Fortnite or Apex Legends than Dead by Daylight, where survivors find weapons, ammo, amulets (provided a shield) and Pink F (health replenishment). . There are 4 classes in Survivor, one of which is a support class with a healer, but you will want as many Pink Fs as possible. Deadite sucker hardship. The loot phase is the calm before the storm (and there is As the game progresses, a storm is approaching) and the demon cannot see any survivors unless he fires a gun or starts the car.

The maps in Evil Dead: Game are massive, so you’ll have to get in a vehicle from time to time. Cars will make life a lot easier as you traverse this room in search of a map piece that will lead you to the Necronomicon (and the knowledge needed to return the demons to Hell). Of course, just put the key in the ignition and you’ll tell the devil where you are, and that’s where the real fun begins.
The demon aims to raise the survivor’s fear meter by setting up traps, owning cars and trees, and borrowing the corpses of the dead and fellow survivors. While I’m playing, the devs make fun of their teammates for shooting right after the game starts. “You do it every game.” Someone smiles and complains. The developer playing the Kandarian Demon thanked him softly and threateningly for the shot, and after a while I got my first horror. “Oh shit!” I screamed as the red devil’s face flashed across my screen. “He found us.” Tim warned me, and I got into the car to escape.
We fall into a state of hysteria, and screams of startling as the dead crowd around us and the trees swing their branches with our heads. I take out a QTE run that brushes the skeleton’s head. Once I’ve successfully completed the steps required to banish the Kandarian Demon, it’s my turn to become the Demon.

Playing as a demon is a completely different experience. I spend most of my time collecting enough resources to unlock points along my skill tree while installing traps and owning vehicles. One of them is a boss branch that lets you send charged demons into fights and control them, allowing you to unleash Henrietta Knowby’s disgusting wrath minutes after you start the game. I’ll grab the survivors and shove their faces into my chest like a twisted antics gig until I hit my belly and release a pulse of toxic gas and I stun an entire squad of survivors.
Evil Dead: The Game is much easier to learn than Dead by Daylight, thanks to its willingness to provide players with a pretty impressive arsenal. The game is far more aggressive than other asymmetric horror games that are more about passive play and survival than team coordination and gunfights. “I think our games are easy to learn, but difficult to master,” Willits explains. This mastery comes as players learn how to maximize their skill tree upgrades, choose the most appropriate survivor class (Leader, Warrior, Hunter, or Support) and master the art of gunfights. There’s an incredible depth to the game that’s instantly accessible.
It certainly feels like Saber Interactive has thought of everything about Evil Dead: Game. As well as appealing to fans of the iconic horror franchise, its status as an accessible and active asymmetric horror game will appeal to those who don’t know the difference between Ash Williams and The Evil Dead. Evil Dead: The Game launches on May 13th for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PS4, PS5, and Nintendo Switch.

And of course you can expect Evil Dead’s specific brand of gross humor woven throughout this game. “The game is gross, gruesome, very over-the-top and we definitely didn’t hold back on that element,” Newman says after I ask if I did indeed down the devs by smothering them in my bosom. “You’re right… a big demon granny hug from Henrietta Knowby’s chest.” Hot.
