New Tactics Ogre trademark signals a revival of Square Enix’s great tactical RPG

Square Enix has filed a trademark application in Japan for Tactical Ogre: Rebornincreasing speculation that the 20-year-old strategy RPG series Ogre Battle is set to be re-released.
The trademark application was filed on March 31 and published on Thursday. Square Enix has made no official announcement of a new game in the Ogre Battle series, the last original release of which was Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis for Game Boy Advance in June 2001. Years 1995 Ogre Tactics: Let’s Hang Together was re-released for PlayStation Portable in 2010.
Something called “Tactics Ogre Remaster” appeared in a massive data leak pulled from Nvidia’s GeForce Now streaming subscription service in September. Fans at the time thought it might be related to a Final Fantasy Tactics remaster, which has not been confirmed or announced by Square Enix.
Square Enix recently launched a remake/remaster; Only on Thursday he launched Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition, a remaster of the JRPG 2000, for Nintendo Switch. Last year’s remasters of titles from the 1990s are included SaGa border for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Windows PC, and 2020s PlayStation 5 and Windows PC upgraded versions Final Fantasy 7 Remake. And remakes of Dragon Quest 3 and cult RPG live alive are also on the way, both in “HD-2D” style.
The Ogre Battle series of real-time strategy games and tactical RPGs began in 1993 with Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen for Super Nintendo. Ogre Battle had sequels in 1999 and 2000 (the latter only launching in Japan) as well as the Tactics Ogre spin-offs from 1995 and 2001.
Yasumi Matsuno, who directed both Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen and Tactics Ogre: Let’s hang together, met with Square Enix to develop scenarios for the Final Fantasy 14 MMO in 2017 and 2020, and launched in 2020 Unknown storya tactical RPG first announced in 2013.
