Before you start troubleshooting sync errors in OneNote, make sure the apps are up to date by installing the latest OneNote or Office updates. If you use multiple Microsoft, work, or school accounts with OneNote, make sure you’re using the account associated with your OneNote notebook. Then, keep OneNote up to date and follow OneNote sync best practices to avoid future sync issues.

Get the latest version of OneNote
The OneDrive desktop app is installed with the Windows operating system. OneDrive can be updated along with other Windows apps through the Windows Store.
For Microsoft account
How to update OneNote with your Microsoft account.
Close all apps.
move start select the menu Microsoft Store.
Sign in to use the Microsoft Store.
If your Microsoft, work, or school account is not listed, go to: profile select the icon Add a work or school account.
Choose View more Select the icon (3 dots) and Download and update.
Choose Get updates.
Your copy of OneNote is now up to date.
Close Microsoft Store.
Download the latest version of OneNote for your Microsoft Office account
If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, update OneNote at the same time as your other Office apps.
Open an Office app such as Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
With an Office app open and a document visible file tab.
Choose account.
Choose update options > update now.
if Save your work before continuing A dialog box appears to save all open documents. Open apps are automatically closed.
Choose Continue.
Wait while Office updates.

Sign in to the correct OneNote account
The OneNote desktop app works with multiple accounts. For example, you can sign in to the OneNote desktop app using a free Microsoft account for personal notebooks and a Microsoft 365 work account for work notes.
To check which account is signed in to OneNote:

Choose setting.
Choose account.
The Microsoft account you use to sign in to OneNote appears in the list of accounts.
To sync your notebook with another Microsoft, work, or school account add account Set up your account in OneNote, then sign in.

Because OneNote is set to manually sync your notebooks, your notebooks often don’t sync. To always have the latest version of your notebook, set OneNote to sync automatically.

If you are not sure if you are using the latest version of a laptop, choose one. sync status See when a notebook page was last saved to OneDrive.
Resolve sync issues when notebooks don’t sync
If your notebooks aren’t syncing, check to see if the sync issue is with the OneNote desktop app or with Microsoft servers.

If your notebook doesn’t open in OneNote Online, there might be a problem with the server. Check the Microsoft service status page. If OneNote is running, check with your ISP to make sure the service is working properly.

- 0xE40105F9: If OneNote displays error 0xE40105F9 (Unsupported Client Build), update your version of OneNote.
- 0xE000005E: Error 0xE000005E (ReferencedRevisionNotFound) in OneNote means the section in your notebook could not be synced. Press down Shift+F9 Sync your laptop manually.
