Panic’s Handheld Playdate Console Has Started Shipping
Group 1 should be ready within the next month and group 2 should be ready.
Playdate, a small yellow handheld console with cranks and an open approach to game development, has finally kicked off its first round of shipments.
In 2021, Lifewire’s Joshua Hawkins was impressed with Playdate’s design. He especially talks about how he blends retro looks and style with more modern sensibilities and ideas. Now that unique-looking handhelds are making their way into the real world, it will be interesting to see how they are received.
scare
Panic’s latest Playdate update video, along with news of order shipping, gives you confidence that the console won’t go anywhere in 2021, despite some production issues. It is not impossible to find or have limited production. Panic says you’ll get one (eventually) as long as you pre-order a play date. We’re also adding a new catalog app that allows developers to upload and sell Playdate games directly to devices in select stores for their customers.
scare
Panic has started shipping the first round of Playdate consoles in the first batch of pre-orders and will be ready within the next month (customers will be notified by email when shipped). The date of the next order for the second group has not yet been announced. If you haven’t pre-ordered yet, but are interested, you can pre-order them for $179 through the Playdate website. Products ordered now may run out in 2023.
There’s even a Playdate podcast that Panic puts out to keep customers, prospects and anyone else they may care about, with or without a device. The first episode documenting Playdate’s development story is available now.
