Pokémon’s Best Third Legendaries, Ranked
Introduced in the Pokémon X and Y Gen 6 games, Zygarde was a really cool design right from the start. It was very unique from the other dragon-esque Legendaries with its focus being on its cells and is said to be the force that balances the beings of life and death, Xerneas and Yveltal. Zygarde’s design and premise won it a lot of praise right from the start, and Ground/Dragon-typing is also a very strong one, seen on other popular Pokémon like Flygon and Garchomp.
Also, the fact that Zygarde was somewhat of a secret to players was a very fun way to learn about him in Pokémon X and Y. The game does not explicitly tell the player that Zygarde exists and that they must go catch it on their own. Instead, Zygarde is simply waiting to be caught inside Terminus Cave. The player would never know that Zygarde was there unless they decided on their own to explore the depths of Terminus Cave and stumbled upon them themselves, which was a wildly fun surprise for players.
Zygarde also got a lot more love during Gen 7 with Pokémon Sun and Moon, which introduced Zygarde’s other forms. Even though Pokémon X and Y somewhat hinted at Zygarde having a unique multi-cellular structure, Pokémon Sun and Moon emphasized greatly on this idea. To the player’s surprise, the Zygarde that they had come to know and love was actually only half of its true form. Zygarde suddenly had three forms, the 10%, 50%, and Complete. Each form has its own signature move and stat spread, and the quest to hunt throughout Sun and Moon’s Alola region to find Zygarde’s cells was a really unique side quest. While Zygarde was really cool from his initial reveal in X and Y, Sun and Moon put a lot more love into them.
#2 Giratina Has Its Own Dimension In Pokémon, And For A Serious Reason
Giratina was introduced in Gen 4, with Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, and was expanded upon much more in Pokémon Platinum. Its design is terrifying and imposing and looks somewhat outlandish compared to a lot of Pokémon‘s other creatures. Even more, Giratina has two forms depending on where it is, either in the Pokémon world or in its own world, the Distortion World. According to the Pokédex, Arceus banished Giratina to the Distortion World due to its incredibly violent nature, where it rules there alone. Knowing that Giratina is a seriously violent creature not only explains its deadly appearance but really adds to its coolness feature since not a lot of Pokémon are actually evil or malicious by choice.
Giratina also had a similar first appearance to Zygarde, where it was hidden in Sinnoh’s Turnback Cave in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, patiently waiting for the player to unknowingly stumble upon them. The discovery of Giratina for the first time greatly added to its charm and mystery, where hardly anything was known about it. Yet, Pokémon Platinum did an amazing job of giving more lore and information about Giratina, as well as giving it a second form. The part of Pokémon Platinum‘s story where Giratina drags Galactic Boss Cyrus to the Distortion World is an extremely memorable scene and even shows that despite Giratina’s violent nature, it was willing to interfere and help save the Pokémon world from Cyrus’ evil scheme. Navigating the Distortion World and facing Giratina in its true form was also a memorable part of generation four, and was something that was sadly absent from the Pokémon BDSP remakes.
#1 Rayquaza Is An Iconic Example Of Amazing Pokémon Design
Rayquaza was first introduced to Pokémon during generation three, with Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, and got a bit more of a spotlight in Pokémon Emerald. It plays a similar role in Hoenn as Zygarde does in Kalos, playing as the mediator between the beings of land and sea, Groudon and Kyogre. The scene in generation three where Rayquaza descends from the sky and deescalates the battle between Groudon and Kyogre before heading back to Sky Pillar is very memorable and portrays to the player just who exactly is the ruler of the Hoenn region in Pokémon. Finding and battling Rayquaza on the top of Sky Pillar is an adventure in of itself.
In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Rayquaza got the spotlight with the introduction of the Delta Episode, which had Rayquaza as the star of the show. Rayquaza even received a new form by getting a Mega Evolution and is the only legendary Pokémon to have one (Groudon and Kyogre’s Primal forms don’t really count). The story of the Delta episode is awesome and moving and is definitely worth a playthrough so that the player can encounter unique characters and Pokémon unavailable elsewhere. Rayquaza is also the final boss of Pokémon Rescue Team DX. The battle is challenging and intense, and the story even shows that Rayquaza is powerful enough to obliterate meteors. And of course, Rayquaza has a simple yet elegant and amazing design and has one of the best Shiny forms in all of Pokémon.
While not all of Pokémon‘s third Legendaries receive the same amount of time in the spotlight, they are all unique with different stories to tell and purposes to fill. With the upcoming Pokémon Scarlet and Violet games later this year, it will be exciting to see how its Legendaries compare, as well as wonder what kind of third Legendary might be part of that trifecta. Unfortunately, fans will likely have to wait until the game’s release, if Pokémon stays with the trend of keeping its third Legendary a relative secret for the player to find.
