Resident Evil 4 Remake Can Make Locations & Bosses Even Better

Here, the game loses some luster, as the tension and fear of the rural European village and its infected residents are replaced with predictable foes armed to the teeth amidst bunkers and barbed wire. Many of the enemies devolve into uninspired QTE events or recycled opponents from this point on. In particular, Resident Evil 4 begins to struggle with its endgame, especially around Jack Krauser, a former colleague of Leon’s. While Krauser is a fascinating and scary Resident Evil enemy with a history only explored in a spinoff lightgun game, his fights are unremarkable and tedious. For example, Krauser’s first boss encounter is a QTE sequence where one wrong button press ends in one of many of Resident Evil 4‘s death scenes forcing the player to restart the entire sequence, cutscene and all. In addition, many mini-bosses suddenly turn into a series of giant, Gatling-gun brandishing Ganados, which slowly lumber around square arenas and unload into Leon with unlimited bullets.

Even the game’s final boss battle against new Resident Evil villain Osmund Saddler leaves a lot to be desired, devolving into a series of running back and forth to hit switches to crash steel beams into a spider-like mutant boss. Resident Evil 4 had some ridiculous boss fights, but this one in particular needed a bit more love and care – and considering the game’s ever-increasing scale – a bit more of a climactic set-piece. Additionally, it’d be great to see the final island stretch and showdown location stay closer to the castle-like roots and steer away from the strange industrial guerilla base setting presented in the original title. Ultimately, it’s good to remember that even if the Resident Evil 4 remake does make significant changes to the game’s setting and encounters, there are still areas that could stand to be improved.
