Retro Gamer celebrates the Spectrum’s 40th anniversary

retro gamer

Without the ZX Spectrum, the UK gaming industry would not exist in its present form. Rare and Rockstar are just two of the big companies whose DNA is crazy about their machines in some way, so the system’s 40th anniversary felt like the perfect time to celebrate.

Retro Gamer’s expansive 14-page feature examines each significant year of machine existence, starting in 1982, discontinuing in the mid-’90s, and reviving again in the ’00s and beyond. Kim Justice, James O’Brien and Mev Dinc will also be present to explain why the system is special.

Issue 232 has a lot of interesting stuff, including a look at how Simpsons: Hit & Run came to be. Find out how Radical Entertainment was able to create a game that lives up to its name as The Simpsons, and why the game wouldn’t exist without Grand Theft Auto III.

Also, talk with David Perry about developing Terminator for the Mega Drive by Sega, learn how the Ecco The Dolphin series was born, find out that Creative Assembly made the first game in the Total War series, and why everyone should play this game indicate what you are doing. Play Capcom vs SNK: Millennium Match.

Other highlights of Issue 232 include an exclusive interview with Taito’s director Egret II Mini, Capstone’s studio profile, and an interview with Nightdive Studios about his amazing restoration project.

Kung-Fu Master, Metal Slug, Propeller Arena, Tetris, Shadow The Hedgehog and many more including reviews of the A500 Mini.

A new version is available now.
