Ryu Has A Beard In Street Fighter 6 & It’s Just Too Much

A brand new announcement trailer for Street Fighter 6 has been released at the PlayStation State of Play event, which featured a fully bearded Ryu that is arresting to say the least. Ryu is the longest-running fighting game character, originally appearing in the first Street Fighter game in 1987, and has been the lead protagonist of the Street Fighter series. Ryu is instantly recognizable and has become one of the most iconic fighting game characters ever, so any change of formula to his tried-and-true character design is going to stand out.

As the protagonist of Street Fighter, Ryu’s special moves changed fighting games forever, and set a precedent for decades of competitive fighter gameplay, whilst rarely straying from his signature look. While Ryu typically dons a white gi, red gloves, and a red headband, some of the Street Fighter games have included alternative outfits for players to unlock. One of these outfits, Ryu’s Battle Outfit 1 in Street Fighter 5, lit the internet ablaze with the “Hot Ryu” meme by giving Ryu a handsome, full beard. Now, Street Fighter 6 appears to be doubling down on the bearded thirst trap, putting a fully bearded Ryu front and center of the new State of Play announcement trailer.

It seems fitting that Ryu would get a fresh, updated look ahead of Street Fighter‘s 35th anniversary in 2022. Still, after 35 years of the same general character design, any changes could be a shock to the system, and Ryu’s new beard isn’t the only thing changing about Ryu’s design. Ryu will also not be wearing the top part of his gi in Street Fighter 6, exactly like his “Hot Ryu” outfit from Street Fighter 5. It remains unclear whether this is an attempt to keep Ryu relevant by changing his design, or if Capcom really just wants to show off Ryu’s new muscles.

Ryu’s New Bearded In Street Fighter 6 Look Is A Big Change

In a much less polarizing observation, Ryu will also be wearing sandals barefoot in Street Fighter 6. In past Street Fighter games, Ryu has typically gone barefoot in his default character designs, with some outfits adding socks and sandals to his feet. He also sported some serious boots when Ryu was added to Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid. But, honestly, most fans of the series and the character are fixated on Ryu’s new, officially bearded face.

Details about the release of Street Fighter 6 remain scarce. While PlayStation’s State of Play announcement trailer featured some story elements and gameplay footage, much is still unknown about the latest Street Fighter game. What has been made abundantly clear is that, when Street Fighter 6 is released sometime in 2023, Ryu will be there for all to Hadoken with his new look.
