Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 — early rumors and what we want to see

Galaxy Z Flip 3 Review

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 is going through a tough time since the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was released last summer. With this model, Samsung has improved the overall clamshell-style foldable phone and introduced a much lower starting price of $999.

However, there is always room for growth, especially in the emerging foldable phone category. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 isn’t perfect, so there’s plenty of opportunity for Samsung to make a better device when a new version comes out later this year. From battery life to durability, the Galaxy Z Flip 4, like its predecessors, could be a game-changer.

We don’t know much about the next cheapest foldable Galaxy Z, but we’ve put together what we’ve heard and wanted to see to make the Galaxy Z Flip 4 one of the best foldable phones.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 Latest News (Updated May 6th)

  • Qualcomm’s rumored Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chip could appear on the Z Flip 4, a leaker said.
  • These could be the four color options you can get for the Galaxy Z Flip 4.
  • The Galaxy Z Flip 4 may have a larger cover display that measures at least 2 inches.
  • It is reported that Samsung Electronics plans to increase the battery capacity of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 by 100mAh.

It’s a thing of the past for now, but Samsung is suspected to be hosting Unpacked for the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Galaxy Z Fold 4 in August. The Galaxy Z phones have the Galaxy Note’s place as Samsung’s mid-device launch, and Samsung is likely to want some lead time before the iPhone 14 launches during its usual September launch period.

The price of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 is unimaginable for Samsung to get away with its current fees. Finally, one of the defining advantages of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was its low starting price of $999. For Samsung to convince more people to use the foldable, the price has to be right. However, the price could drop further, according to a tweet from trusted leaker Ross Young.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4: Rumored Specs

There isn’t much to say about the Galaxy Z Flip 4 yet, but there are rumors that Samsung can keep the same 6.7-inch internal and 1.9-inch external displays on the Galaxy Z Flip 3. It would make sense. The design of the Flip 3 is pretty good and the external display is definitely useful. However, Ross Young says the Galaxy Z Flip 4 could have a larger cover display measuring at least two inches. Young’s has since revealed that it can offer four color options: gold, gray, light blue and light purple. The Z Flip line looks unique and playful compared to many other phones available today.

We’ve also heard rumors that Samsung has tested a version of the Galaxy Z Flip 4 with an under-display camera. We hope this isn’t definitive given the shabbyness inside the Galaxy Z Fold 3. The source of the leak claims that Samsung is hoping to make the Galaxy Z Flip 3 lighter by tweaking the hinge design. We just want to see a sleek design like the one Oppo Find N offers.

Unfortunately, some rumors right now are suggesting that the Galaxy Z Flip 4 could have the same 3,300mAh battery as the Flip 3. However, according to a new leak, Samsung is actually planning to increase the total capacity by 100mAh. Lack of battery life is one of the Flip’s biggest weaknesses right now, so unless Samsung uses a few tricks it could be a big deal.

To power the phone, Samsung could switch to the rumored Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chip instead of the current standard 8 Gen 1 seen in phones like the Galaxy S22 series. This will be a huge performance boost over last year’s models and many phones already on the market this year.

Another similarity to the previous model could be a fingerprint sensor with a power button. Samsung is working on an under-display fingerprint sensor for its foldable devices, but for now, it’s decided that the Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 would be better without it.

The phone may appear under a different name later this year. In some European countries, the current model is now sold as the Galaxy Flip 3. This is an obvious reaction to Russian officials’ stealing the Z in support of the invasion of Ukraine. It’s likely that Samsung will completely remove the Z from the next version of the phone and call it the Galaxy Flip 4 instead.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4: What we want to see

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 is a significant improvement over the original Galaxy Z Flip. But it was far from perfect. We believe that some of these dazzling problems can be addressed when Samsung releases the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

better battery life

The battery life of the Galaxy Z Flip 3 was the worst. In Tom’s Guide’s battery life tests, it didn’t last more than 6 hours in adaptive refresh rate mode. This is not good. We believe this is partly due to the higher power consumption due to the internal 120Hz display and larger cover display. If you opted for the Galaxy Z Flip 3 in our review, it’s nice to have a charger handy.

For the Galaxy Z Flip 4, we want to see better battery life. It’s basic, but unless Samsung rolls out a bigger power adapter, that could be a big challenge. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1’s energy efficiency boost won’t improve the situation too much.

increased durability

While Samsung has made great strides in improving the durability of their latest foldable devices, I’ve read reports that they will own the Galaxy Z Flip 3 devices for months. While we cannot corroborate these reports with our own experience, it is still worrisome to hear that the phone won’t make it past the first year. This is another area where flyers still have a long way to go.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 would ideally see further improvements in terms of durability and longevity. No one wants to spend $999 on something that breaks down or becomes inoperable in a year, let alone months.

gapless hinge

Samsung may have pioneered the form factor for foldable phones, but Oppo has outperformed Korean phone makers in one key area: hinge design. The Oppo Find N has a really seamless hinge. This means there are no gaps between the displays right next to the hinges, helping to protect the inner screen from dust and damage.

We’d love to see the Galaxy Z Flip 4 (and the Galaxy Z Fold 4) adopt a gapless hinge design. Samsung, take just one page from Oppo’s playbook.

faster charging

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 has 15W of wired charging, which is patheticly slow compared to the rest of the industry, let alone phones that break or exceed $1,000. When a phone like the OnePlus 9 Pro can charge at 65W, we wanted the Flip 3 to charge much faster, especially given the poor battery life.

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 should have at least 25W that the Galaxy S22 achieves. (Galaxy S22 Ultra and Galaxy S22 Plus are capable of 45W wired charging.)

telephoto lens

Perhaps to keep costs down, Samsung has decided not to put a telephoto lens on the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The phone had two cameras: the main sensor and the ultrawide. If the $999 Galaxy S22 Plus comes with a 3x telephoto lens, it’s pretty noticeable that the Flip 3 doesn’t have a telephoto lens.

For the Galaxy Z Flip 4, even with just a 2x or 2.5x zoom, I wish they added a telephoto lens. While foldable devices have to make sacrifices, Samsung seems harder to justify the loss of camera functionality.

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 was a pretty good improvement over the original Galaxy Z Flip. But it was very far from perfect. We think Samsung could stand to address some of those glaring issues when it releases the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

For the Galaxy Z Flip 4, we want to see better battery life. Simple, but that might be a tall order unless Samsung puts in larger power packs. The power efficiency gains from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 aren’t likely to improve things too much on their own.

Improved durability
While Samsung made great strides in improving the durability of the last round of its foldables, we’ve read reports that Galaxy Z Flip 3 units are breaking a few months into ownership. While we can’t verify these reports with our own experience, it’s nonetheless concerning to hear about phones not making it through their first year.
