Scarlet & Violet’s Region Has One Pokémon Not Seen In Decades

During the second Pokémon Scarlet and Violet trailer, the protagonist can be seen exploring various locations in the Gen 9 region. In one scene, the trainer is running through a field of grass as a group of Venonat frolic across the land. While A Gen 1 Kanto Pokémon’s inclusion in the game doesn’t seem all that surprising on the surface, a viral post on Twitter revealed why Venonat in Gen 9 is actually a really big deal.

Twitter user swagkirby778 pointed out that Venonat hasn’t actually been a part of a regional Pokédex since Pokémon Gold and Silver’s Johto region. While the Gen 1 Bug-type has been catchable in previous entries as a part of the National Pokédex, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is the first time that Venonat is a regional spawning Pokémon since Gen 2’s Pokédex. Based on the North American release of Gold and Silver, that means Venonat and its evolution Venomoth hasn’t been a regional Pokémon in over 21 years.

The surprising fact is a good example of just how massive the Pokémon series’ National Pokédex has become. Every time a new generation launches, Game Freak has to pick from hundreds of classic Pokémon to decide which ones to bring back for a new region. With the release of Pokémon Legends: Arceus’ Hisui region in January, there is now a total of 905 Pokémon in the entire franchise.

With Pokémon Scarlet and Violet releasing on November 18, the National Pokédex will only continue to expand further at a quick rate. Thankfully Gen 9 looks to be including a variety of classic Pokémon that have been overlooked, some that have even flown under the radar for decades.
