Sean Astin Gives Lord of the Rings TV Show His Blessing

While it is certainly comforting to hear these words from the actor who played many the fan-favorite Samwise in Jackson’s films, some may still be apprehensive. The Rings of Power is not the first time in recent years that Amazon has adapted a classic fantasy series and given it what some call a “Game of Thrones makeover.” Back in 2021, Amazon released its much anticipated adaptation of Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time, and some pointed out that it did feel as if Amazon was simply trying to turn the series into the next Game of Thrones with an uptick in both sex and violence from the original source material. Considering this, not everyone may be ready to take Astin at his word just yet.
That said, with just one teaser trailer released so far, there is no indication that The Rings of Power will be a disappointment, and some have prejudged the series before its arrival. Astin makes a good point that the immense amount of money and time that Amazon Studios has spent acquiring the rights to Tolkein’s source material indicates a genuine dedication to bringing it to the screen accurately. As well as starring in The Lord of the Rings, Astin has also read much of Tolkien’s work, so his opinion on the series bodes well. Ultimately, audiences can only wait and judge for themselves when The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power releases this September.
