Secret Wars’ Beyonder Returns in ’80s Retro Art Cover for Defenders Beyond

A retro cover for Defenders Beyond features the return of the Beyonder, the mastermind behind the ’80’s crossover series Secret Wars. Drawn by artist Leonardo Romero, the cover is a variant to the upcoming Defenders Beyond #1, out this July from Marvel Comics.

The Beyonder made his first appearance in 1984’s Secret Wars #1, created by writer Jim Shooter and artist Mike Zeck. The Beyonder is typically depicted as the most powerful being in the Marvel Universe and is famous for gathering the greatest heroes and villains together on Battleworld, a planet created specifically so the omnipresent entity could directly observe the battle between good and evil. Seemingly killed off at the end of sequel series Secret Wars II, the Beyonder and his mysterious history has been the subject of various Marvel comics throughout the years. Now, he may be set for a triumphant return.

Artist Leonardo Romero Tweeted out his retro variant cover for Defenders Beyond, which features the Beyonder front and center. Defenders Beyond #1 comes from the creative team of writer Al Ewing and artist Javier Rodriguez, a continuation of their previous series, Defenders: There Are No Rules. That series saw Doctor Strange and the Masked Raider assemble a new Defenders team to travel the cosmos and uncover the previous versions of the Marvel Universe. For Defenders Beyond, it looks like Ewing and Rodriguez have put together another group of eclectic heroes, this time including Loki, America Chavez, the Blue Marvel, Tigra, and Taia, mother of the planet-devouring Galactus, who made her debut in Defenders: There Are No Rules.

First appearing in 1971, the Defenders were initially made up of a collection of oddball heroes operating at the fringes of the Marvel Universe. Following the Defenders TV adaptation that featured Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, the team was briefly rebranded as a street-level team in the comics universe. However, 2018 saw the return of the classic line-up of Doctor Strange, Namor, the Hulk, and the Silver Surfer, and writer Al Ewing returned the team’s focus to dealing with bizarre, reality-warping threats as the line-up has changed and evolved in subsequent series.

Defenders Beyond continues this trend, with the now-deceased Doctor Strange issuing the new team a warning from “beyond” the grave. But is it possible that the “beyond” of the title could have an additional meaning? Does Romero’s variant cover hint at the return of the Beyonder himself within the comic’s pages? Only time will tell. In the meantime, the Beyonder will have to content himself with being the focus of Leonardo Romero’s retro variant for Defenders Beyond #1, out on July 20 from Marvel Comics.
