Sega’s Next Console Confirmed As Mega Drive Mini 2

Sega has announced that its next retro console will be the Mega Drive Mini 2, which will feature games from both the Sega Mega Drive and Mega-CD. The Sega Genesis is the name given to the console in North America, with the console referred to as the Sega Mega Drive in most other regions, hence the current name for this new retro console. This is also the case for the Sega CD, which was called the Mega-CD in other regions.
There are a number of ways to play classic Sega games on modern systems, such as Nintendo Switch Online’s Expansion Pack featuring Genesis titles, or the Sega Mega Drive Classics title that was released on a number of systems. Following the end of Sega’s console ambitions, the company was quick to repackage its old games for other systems, and the Sega Genesis is easily the console with the most ports for other systems. The 16-bit Sonic the Hedgehog titles have been ported the most and are continuing to receive remasters into the current era, with the upcoming Sonic Origins combining most of the classic titles into one package.

In 2019, Sega released the Sega Genesis Classic, and it will soon receive a successor. The official Sega YouTube channel has announced the Mega Drive Mini 2, which is coming to Japan on October 27, 2022. According to Video Games Chronicle, the system will feature a combination of 50 Mega-CD and Sega Mega Drive games, as well as a new title. One of the games confirmed for the line-up is a new Mega Drive port of Fantasy Zone, which might be the new title. The original Sega Genesis Classic had new ports of Darius and Tetris, so there could be more ports in the work for the Mega Drive Mini 2.

It’s great to see Sega exploring more of its back catalog, instead of trotting out the Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, and Streets of Rage games for the umpteenth time. It’s disappointing that the Mega Drive Mini 2 isn’t a Sega Dreamcast Mini retro console, as Sega hinted in the past, but the success of this console could lead to long-awaited retro consoles for both the Sega Dreamcast and Sega Saturn. The Sega catalog is filled with amazing retro games and it’s time that the company made them more available to modern gamers.
