Skate Story Gameplay Looks Like Tony Hawk In a Fever Dream

During Summer Game Fest 2022, Devolver Digital has revealed a new trailer for Skate Story, which looks as if Tony Hawk were trapped in a fever dream. While skating fans have lots to look forward to, like the upcoming Skate 4, Tony Hawk and his Pro Skater series have remained relatively quiet since the 2020 release of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2.

The last time Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise was the center of attention was when the remasters of the two original games came out to a well-deserved positive reception. Fans have been hoping for the news on Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 and 4, but, unfortunately, the developers at Vicarious Visions were reassigned within Activision Blizzard to work on the Call of Duty franchise. In that regard, the anticipated comeback might never happen, though a new resurgence in skating games means there’s still a possibility for new remakes and remasters from the beloved franchise.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY

The latest trailer for Skate Story, shared to Twitter by Devolver Digital following the publisher’s showcase, turned out to be among the most impressive videos demonstrated at Summer Game Fest. Players take the role of a demon made out of glass and pain, which isn’t much of a metaphor since the protagonist can literally crumble into small fragments after a failed trick. The events of the upcoming skating game take place in the Underworld, and to escape it, the demon has to embark on an impossible quest from the Devil – to reach the Moon and swallow it. While skating through this vividly colored plain of reality, players can destroy other demons and save innocent souls from the unenviable fate of staying in this weird world forever. Skate Story is mostly developed by a single person, Sam Eng. The game does benefit from an atmospheric soundtrack in the form of psychedelic beats by Blood Cultures, however, it’s possibly the only part of the game that is not personally handled by its lone creator.

While the future of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater is still unclear, Skate Story looks like it could very much appeal to the same audience. Its unique concept, combined with the classic competitive nature of skateboarding, is set to provide a new take on the genre in a way that existing skating games haven’t yet explored. The game is slated for a release sometime in 2023, and with little news on Skate 4, it could well beat the EA title to market and satiate fans looking for an all-new skateboarding experience.

Although the actual skating mechanics seem to be straightforward, the gorgeous visual aesthetics make Skate Story favorably stand out as one of the most memorable announcements of Summer Game Fest. The imaginative mind behind the game, Sam Eng, is implementing a unique creative vision, which probably means that the gaming experience will be one of a kind from start to finish. And while developing a video game singlehandedly is a massive challenge, at least Skate Story’s creator has full control of the project’s every single aspect.

You are a demon, made out of glass and pain in Skate Story from @bysameeng!
Ollie, kickflip, and grind your way through the ash and smoke of the Underworld as you take on a seemingly impossible quest.
