Spider-Man’s New Costume Accidentally Revealed How Fans See Peter Parker

Warning! Potential spoilers for X-Men’s Hellfire Gala event below

In amazing new cover art for X-Men’s 2022 Hellfire Gala, Spider-Man gets a costume that’s so cool, that most people probably wouldn’t even realize it’s Peter Parker underneath the stylish suit. In the Marvel Comics variant cover for the upcoming Amazing Spider-Man #5 by Russell Dauterman and Matt Wilson, Spider-Man’s Hellfire Gala costume shines (literally), as it’s a bold look you’d expect from a different web-slinger and not Parker.

Peter Parker’s Spider-Man has rocked some of the most iconic looks in comics, as his classic costume has stood the test of time since he debuted more than 60 years ago. However, rarely has he taken a bold approach with his appearance, opting for the great, but familiar costume he’s worn during his adventures with Marvel Comics. Meanwhile, newer web-slingers like Spider-Gwen and Miles Morales’ Spider-Man have sported some bold looks that offer more fashionable takes on the spider-themed superhero costumes. But, in the new Hellfire Gala cover art, Spider-Man trades in his usual suit for a much-different look that’s more Miles Morales than Peter Parker.

Artist Russell Dauterman shared his and colorist Matt Wilson’s new cover for Amazing Spider-Man #5, which features the all-new costume for Peter Parker that he will wear at X-Men’s 2022 Hellfire Gala. The suit takes Spider-Man’s costume in a different direction from his classic look, as it stands out with its giant, red glowing spider on his back, with bright glowing webbed eyes, fingers, and feet. It seems like something you might see Miles Morales wear at the Hellfire Gala, as he’s the Spider-Man that usually has much more stylish and standout costumes than Peter.

Both fans and fellow heroes at the Hellfire Gala might not immediately recognize the Spider-Man as Peter Parker, as the high-fashion, bold costume is a new kind of look for the hero. They’re more used to seeing him in a different light, as Peter Parker isn’t known for his statement fashion pieces. But, as the expression goes, when in Rome, as Peter is on-theme with the other chic looks being offered at the event. So while Dauterman and Wilson’s art is superb and the costume design is excellent, it’s a bit of a bummer that Spider-Man won’t be wearing Moon Knight’s Mr. Knight suit, as was hinted at in a recent Marvel Comics short story.

It’s surprising to see Spider-Man wear such a bold look, as it will be fascinating to see his former Hellfire Gala attendee’s reaction to the glowing costume. Nevertheless, it’s a nice change of pace for the hero, as the new ensemble should turn heads – which will be a new feeling for Peter Parker, as they will see a new side of the hero. Readers can pick up the new variant cover art when Amazing Spider-Man #5 by Marvel Comics arrives in comic book stores in July.
