Spirittea Preview: A Soul-Cleansing Demonstration

That said, Spirittea‘s preview build does hint at more dynamic bits of gameplay too, such as chasing spirits around the town to speak to them. There’s also a two-tiered vision system in Spirittea, where the player can shift into spirit vision to see what spirits are around and get additional interactions. This is something the player will need to keep an eye on thanks to a depleting bar, meaning the player will either need to drink more Spirittea or go to bed for the night.

Visually Spirittea is looking rather nice at this early stage. The character art is particularly impressive, with Earthbound-style overworld sprites and some nice locations. Of particular note are the more complex character portraits, that really give the inhabitants of the game world a sense of personality.

Spirittea may have a more varied tone than the extremely pastoral angle of Stardew Valley, though. Although the bathhouse and blacksmiths feel very traditional, the town does have a more contemporary quality to it thanks to things like a bicycle shop, karaoke bar, and coffee shop, although it will be interesting to see how these locations are implemented in the final release. There is, of course, a more spiritual angle to Spirittea than some of its peers, with a large temple down by the coast for instance.

Based on this brief demo, Spirittea will also have plenty of light-hearted humor to keep things ticking along. There’s a nice, jovial edge to the dialogue, particularly when it comes to conversations with spirits, while the bathhouse reactions and the general vibe of the spirits in that situation is bound to raise a smile. It’s clear that there’s going to be lots to find out about the inhabitants of the town, too, with hints of more relationship-based conversations to come from the brief interactions in this demo.

It’s this wittiness and charm that will hopefully continue to be a driving force as and when we see more of Spirittea. There’s almost an Undertale quality in characters interacting with each other, feeling larger than life (quite literally in the case of the spirits). This is most prominent in the demo via Wonyan, a cat who acts as your primary spirit ally, and initially tasks the player with getting the bathhouse back to working order.

Spirittea is shaping up rather well based on this preview. It’s a simple snapshot of a game in development, but between it’s endearing done, task-juggling gameplay and fun characters, this could be a very neat choice for those who enjoy an engaging life sim.

Spirittea releases in 2022 for PC and consoles. Screen Rant was provided with a PC download code for the purposes of this preview.
