Star Trek: Strange New Worlds showrunner teases “totally different Kirk” in new series

strange new world

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds explores the early days of the USS Enterprise. The first season of the Paramount series will focus on the familiar-faced Captain Pike as he explores new versions of Spock, Uhura, and Number One.

But even before the first season aired, the Star Trek: Discovery spinoff mocked Kirk’s appearance. He will be played by The Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley in the show’s upcoming second season.

Co-showrunner Henry Alonso Myers said of his character introduction that Kirk’s new version will be “totally different” from his previous portrayal. The producer, who heads the show with Akiva Goldsman, said he knew very well that people would have strong opinions about the character when he was introduced.

“I’m sure people will feel their own interpretation of the previous interpretation when they come back to this issue,” Myers told TVLine. “We don’t want to deny it. We love all Kirks.”

However, he added: “Our goal at the time was to tell a story about Kirk, a completely different Kirk that we just encountered in the Kelvin universe. An inner story that wasn’t possible at the time about younger versions of the characters that we don’t know yet. I hope that it will be fun for the broadcast to be released.”

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is already getting rave reviews, giving it four stars in Total Film’s ratings. According to a review by Richard Edwards, the series is reminiscent of Gene Roddenberry’s original mission statement for USS Enterprise, introducing familiar yet new characters. It does so in the “style” we call “a very promising start” for the series.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to premiere May 5th on Paramount Plus in the US, but will air on TBC in the UK. Check out the Star Trek timeline before launch to learn how to watch shows and movies in order.
